On June 10-13, Rotary clubs in District 7350 provided scholarships for 52 high school juniors and seniors from around the area to attend a leadership camp at Juniata College. Known as Rotary Youth Leadership Academy (RYLA), the program provides education and training for young people with outstanding leadership potential.
Those chosen to participate in RYLA learned about Rotary’s 4-Way Test: Is it the truth?; Is it fair to all concerned?; Will it build goodwill and better friendships?; Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
They participated in such activities as a GPS orienteering course; team-building programs at Penn State’s Shavers Creek; community service projects at the Huntingdon United Way and Westminster Woods, a continuing care retirement community; leadership program developed and instructed by Rotarian Bruce Harlan; and meetings at the Rotary clubs of Huntingdon and Tyrone.
RYLA participants receive training from successful professionals, with special emphasis on the importance of ethics and community service. They often become leaders in their schools, communities and careers.
The Rotary Club of Tyrone provided scholarships for Laura Thompson, Wesley Young, and Niko Lambert, and is part of Rotary International’s global network of more than 32,000 clubs in 166 countries. Rotary International consists of 1.2 million professionals who volunteer to improve the quality of life in their home and world communities. Through service efforts, Rotary club members help promote understanding and peace throughout the world. Rotary clubs support programs that address today’s most critical issues, including hunger, the environment, illiteracy and youth development.
