With the recent case of West Nile Virus found in the Duncansville and Altoona areas, Tyrone Borough Code Enforcement Officer Tom Lang wants to remind Tyrone Borough residents of measures of prevention for West Nile Virus.
West Nile Virus is a mosquito-born disease that made its first appearance in the United States in 1999. In Pennsylvania, West Nile Virus was first detected in birds, mosquitos and a horse in 2000. Since then, more than 300 human cases have been reported.
Residents are reminded that prevention is the best resource against West Nile Virus. According to Lang, the best way to avoid contracting West Nile Virus is to avoid mosquito bites. Residents can reduce their risk of West Nile Virus exposure by taking several steps.
The first of step would be to avoid leaving any containers, such as tires, bird baths or barrels that may become full of stagnant water in your yard area.
Also, limit outdoor activity during dawn, early evening and dusk.
Wear light-colored clothing, long-sleeved shirts, long pants, socks and shoes when working outdoors, especially in infested areas.
Also, use insect repellent containing DEET. It is generally recommended that adults use repellents that contain DEET at a level of 30 percent or less. For children, it is best to be conservative and keep concentration at 10 percent or less.
