On Monday, Tyrone traveled the long journey to DuBois High School for the first time to play a tennis match.
The DuBois girls won all five singles matches, but Maryelyn Hunter and Amy Lewis won at Number One doubles for the Lady Eagles and Laura Thompson and Kayla Patton followed with the victory at the Number Two doubles spot as well.
“We were missing Emily Tompkins due to illness and that hurt us,” said Tyrone tennis coach Mike Hample. Tompkins is a freshman from Bellwood-Antis, who competes with Tyrone under the recently signed co-operative program between the two local schools. “We competed well in many of the matches but could often not win the critical point to win the game. Our doubles teams both played well and gave us two more wins for the year. Dubois was very hospitable and we hope to continue the series.”

Returning to the Clay Avenue courts on Tuesday, the Tyrone Lady Eagle tennis team hosted Altoona. The always tough Lady Mountain Lions dusted off the Tyrone girls 7-0.
Despite the shutout, Lady Eagle Laura Thompson battled into the third game before falling in the Number Five singles match and both doubles matches were extremely competitive.
Thompson dropped the first game 3-6, but rallied to win the second 6-4, and took Altoona’s Sarah Quinn to a long third game, before finally falling in the must-win-by-two 10-12 finale.
The Number One doubles team of Maryelyn Hunter and Amy Lewis battled before falling 6-8, while the Number Two team of Kayla Patton and Elena Myers lost 7-9.
“As always, Altoona is a strong team. Despite some very good tennis, our girls were unable to win the big points when they needed them,” said Tyrone tennis coach Mike Hample. “We had an excellent chance to win at #5 singles and in both doubles matches, but the girls were unable to capitalize on early leads. Thompson’s match was another extremely competitive marathon match, lasting until all the other singles matches and both doubles matches were finished.”
