The Tyrone Junior High football team scored in the final 20 seconds against Central Mountain, to keep their undefeated streak going on Thursday, at Gray-Vets Memorial Field.
An interception by Charles Wilson Adams set Tyrone up with 3:40 left in the fourth quarter, and Christian Getz powered in from five yards out for the winning touchdown, with just 20 seconds remaining on the game clock, in a 20-12 triumph.
John Romano, who led the Little Eagles with 88 yards rushing on just five carries, gave the Tyrone junior high an early lead with a pair of first-quarter touchdowns. Romano scooted 29 yards for the first score of the ballgame and then added a 50-yard scamper later in the opening stanza.
Central Mountain came back with a TD of their own on a 55-yard punt return by Von Walker in the third quarter and tied the score with a three-yard Walker TD rush early in the fourth quarter.
“It was a real barn-burner, a good game to watch,” said Tyrone junior high coach Dan Plummer.
Following the score by Getz, Central Mountain tried to quickly move down the field through the air. The Little Wildcats completed one pass for a first down, but Adams put an end to any further threat, with his second interception of the game and Tyrone ran out the clock.
Getz rushed 14 times for 48 yards, and Kaleb Chronister completed four of eight passes for Tyrone, for 72 yards. Caleb Snyder had two catches for 42 yards, Marcus Wagner one for 22 and Courtland Pannebaker one for eight yards.
Snyder had one quarterback sack and the Eagle “D” had five tackles behind the line of scrimmage for losses.
“Overall it was a good game, it was definitely a big challenge,” said Plummer. “We struggled in the second and third quarters, but bounced back to get the job done. Our defense all game long, and especially in the fourth quarter was the key. It got us the ball when we scored the winning touchdown and stopped Central Mountain, when they tried to come back.”
Tyrone will host the Clearfield junior high next Thursday at 5:30 p.m., with the 7th/8th grade game beginning at 4.
