The Tyrone Junior High boys basketball team upped it’s record to 7-2 and got their sixth straight win Friday at home against visiting Lewistown.
In what would become part of a four-game sweep by the Tyrone boys basketball program from eighth grade through varsity, the Eagles fought off a determined Panthers team to earn a 46-42 victory.
Through the first quarter, the Eagles started off strong 12-6 with a couple of three-pointers from point guard Brandon Gehret and a couple of baskets by Matt Brooks.
But Lewistown would keep pace in the second quarter, matching four points apiece from the Eagles Chris McCaulley and Nate Dane to go into the locker room down only 25-17.
In the third quarter, statistically a strong one for the Tyrone team all season, Lewistown outscored the Eagles 11-9 and got within two points at 27-25.
But a couple of baskets by Jon Hampton helped get the lead back up to five points at 34-29.
Down the stretch, Lewistown would close the gap to three at 38-35 with 3:27 to go, and to two 40-38 at 2:08. But the Eagles teamwork enabled them to go back out in front 46-39 after a nifty pass by Nate Dane to Ethan Etters underneath. With time running out, an uncontested three pointer by Lewistown made the final score 46-42.
Jon Hampton led the Eagles with 11 points.
The Eagles next game will be at home on Tuesday, when they get a chance to even the score with Penns Valley, a team to which they lost a close one earlier in the season 36-33.
