The first night of the season was not forgotten by Tyrone, losing in a close game at Lewistown. Ever since that game, Tyrone won five of six conference games that pushed the Eagles to a tie with Lewistown for second in the MAC. This match-up was one of the tops in the conference, and Tyrone got the best of it.
Early in the first, Tyrone jumped into a box and one on Matt Hilton, forcing other Lewistown players to step up and make shots to keep them in the game. Travis Hook took all that Tyrone allowed him as he pushed Lewistown ahead early, 12-5.
With the lead in Lewistown’s hands, Tyrone kept pressuring Hilton which finally got to surrounding Panther players as they started missing easy shots that Tyrone used to feed their fast break. Tyrone finished the first quarter on a 9-0 run that put them ahead by two going to the second quarter.
Kevin Hershberger started off the second quarter, continuing the 9-0 run as Tyrone scored six straight putting them ahead, 20-14 before Kyle Zimmerman nailed a trey to silence the run.
Zimmerman checked in and hit three trey’s in the second quarter, pushing Lewistown right back into the game. Adam Corle lit up Lewistown in the second quarter, draining two three’s and leading the team in scoring with 11 for the half. Tad Chamberlain also kept Tyrone ahead, controlling the post and scored 10 for the half right behind Corle.
As the half came to an end, Tyrone kept the score in their hands, 36-31, and commanding momentum going into the third quarter. Leonard Wilson played the role of the box and one on Matt Hilton, and held him to just five first half points which was an impressive stat for anyone who guards this young player.
“Leonard did an outstanding job on Hilton,” coach Mike Harris said. “If we didn’t hold him under or close to 15 points, we would be in trouble. He was like a glove on him and just gave him a hard time on offense. Leonard really played out his role
tonight.”
Lewistown stayed in the game thanks to five three point field goals, all in the second quarter.
The third quarter started off with a bang as Chamberlain and Wilson unloaded eight points to get things started for Tyrone. Hilton started to see some open looks at the hoop, however, and hit eight points to answer back at Tyrone’s run. Hilton wouldn’t hit another point until the end of the fourth quarter.
With Tyrone ahead by four, 42-38, Wilson took a nice run on the break, weaving in and out of defenders and making a tough lay-up at the other end. This was Tyrone’s game, and they were back into the swing of things running all over the top ranked Panthers.
“We kept attacking the basket and pushing that basketball,” Harris said. “That’s our game, this is what we have to do to win games and we did just that.”
Tyrone continued their pace, but Lewistown was right there with them hitting three’s all over. Zimmerman kept shooting great from behind the arc, hitting two more trey’s to add to his total of five after three quarters. Just a little guy, he managed to drain trey after trey on this box and one defense.
As the third quarter ended, Matt Hilton fired up a desperation full court shot that lodged in the backboard. After several attempts from the officials, Mr. Tony Yaniello, Tyrone’s A.D., came out and showed off his strength as he dislodged the ball with ease.
After three quarters of play, Tyrone and Lewistown were close with Tyrone leading 57-54 and a momentum swing from the fans to start the fourth quarter.
Tyrone picked up early in the fourth, running a 10-2 sprout on Lewistown going up 67-56 after a Panther timeout with just 4:11 to go. Tyrone shut Lewistown out for over four minutes, keeping their 11 point lead. With just 2:53 to go, Chris Tressler came in and hit five quickies to cut Tyrone’s lead to six points as Tyrone was forced to call a timeout.
As the game came to an end, Lewistown fouled Tyrone to death that sealed the victory from the foul line. Tad Chamberlain dominated Lewistown in the second half scoring 13 points to aid the lead for Tyrone.
Tyrone went on to win 72-64, recording a 6-2 record now in the MAC. This puts Tyrone ahead of Lewistown by a game and back a game from Bellefonte.
“The guys were just ready to go,” Harris said. “They played really well, and we came back against Clearfield and Lewistown and got the job done.”
Tad Chamberlain led Tyrone, controlling the inside with 23 points along with 19 from Kevin Hershberger in their big conference victory.
Lewistown drops to 6-3 in the conference and 11-4 overall. Despite 19 from Chris Tressler and 16 from Matt Hilton, the Panthers just couldn’t keep up with Tyrone’s fast break offense.
