Tyrone junior Emily Ingle and Bellwood-Antis freshman Ben Hatch won their individual events at Tuesday’s District Six Track and Field Meet to lead their respective teams and qualify for the PIAA state meet next weekend at Seth Grove Stadium on the campus of Shippensburg University.
Ingle took the lead at the start of the 1600 and wasn’t really pushed in winning in a time of 5:27.51 that was just a couple tenths of a second off her fastest time of the year. “Emily looked sharp in her specialty and wasn’t really challenged acknowledged Tyrone coach Tony Yaniello. Her hard work and dedication is starting to pay off.” Ingle also finished fourth in the 3200 run.
Hatch won the boys 800 run with a time of 1:59.92, the first time this year, anybody has been under 2:00.
“Ben has a good combination of speed and endurance,” said Bellwood-Antis boys coach Nick Lovrich. “That is why he excells in an event that has almost become a sprint.”
Hatch also helped the Blue Devils 3200 relay team qualify with a second place finish in 8:22.23, the best time for the B-A 3200 relay this year. Ben was joined by Evan Hughes, Aaron Bell and Brandon Pruznak in the relay.
“Brandon and Aaron have been steady for us all year, “ said Lovrich. Last year our 3200 relay team was so close to getting to states. It was good to see their hard work paid off with a trip to states this year.”
Bell and Pruznak also each qualified in an individual event as well.
Bell, a senior who was seeded second, placed second in the 3200 with a time of 10:07.11. Pruznak also a second seed in the 400, ran a 52.11 to place second to Huntingdon senior Christoph Kirsten a German foreign exchange student.
The B-A sophomore was also fifth in the high jump with a jump of 5-10 and fifth in the long jump with 20-11?2.
Other B-A placewinners include the 1600 relay team (3:38.50) was fourth, Dan Kovac was seventh in the triple jump breaking 40 feet for the first time (40-4 1/2) Tony DelGrosso was fifth in the discus (140-5) and Ted Bailor had a personal best to finish eighth in the pole vault at 11-3.
The B-A boys (501?2 points) placed fourth in the team standings behind champion Westmont-Hilltop (78), Bishop McCort (76 1/2) and Central Cambria (52 1/2), just two points behind the third place Red Devils. Tyrone was 14th with 22 points.
The Golden Eagle 400 relay team of Leonard Wilson, Trey Brockett, Shane Barr and Billy Dean placed third with a time of 46.11 that was good enough for third place to advance to the state meet.
Brockett (41-2 1/2) was fourth in the triple jump and Wilson (39-10 3/4) was eighth. Dean (11.48) was fourth in a very fast 100 dash in which Brad Kanuch, who was named the outstanding male with four firsts, including three new meet records set a new mark with a time of 10.73. Billy was also eighth in the long jump with a leap of 19-51?2. Adam Shaffer was fifth in a strong field in the javelin with a heave of 163-7.
“All of these kids except Billy Dean are underclassmen,” said Yaniello. They have been working hard, although a couple of sloppy handoffs hurt our time at Districts. We will work hard this week on improving.”
Tyrone sophomore Elizabeth Tepsic joins Ingle at the PIAA meet next weekend with a second place in the triple jump with a combined leap of 36-0. Tepsic was fourth in the 100 intermediate hurdles (16.80).
“Liz has just been phenomenal,” said Yaniello. She was just a whisker off of qualifying in the 100 hurdles and she beat all the people who had beaten her earlier. She has improved her technique a lot since the beginning of the track season. Liz has better times as a sophomore than Christina Burnett and she placed second and third at states. She has the same kind of ability that Christina had, I really wouldn’t be surprised if Liz placed at states.”
The B-A 400 relay team of Steph Hatch, Erica Greene, Lauren Leap and Lauren Carter qualified for states with a second place finish of 52.38, a personal best for the girls.
Ashley Mueller (16.87) placed fifth in the 100 hurdles Carter (50.32) was eighth in the 300 hurdles, Hatch (4-11) was sixth in the high jump, the B-A 1600 relay was sixth (4:19.35), and Whitney Edwards was fifth in the pole vault and Allison Sinisi was sixth with both girls clearing 8-6.
“Lauren Carter wasn’t feeling well so we scratched her in some events and she tried to do her best in the others,” explained B-A girls coach Julie Roseborough. “ And they changed the schedule of events so that Steph Hatch came immediately from running the 400 relay to high jump and she just didn’t have the time to recover the pop in her legs. We did manage to place in six events and get the 400 relay team to states. We will just have to work hard this week and go down there and see what happens.”
