The District Six baseball and softball playoff pairings have been announced for the 2005 season.
There are two first round Class A and three Class AA games on May 19.
Tyrone, with head coach Tom Coleman, will host Westmont-Hilltop at the Harry K. Sickler Athletic Complex on Thursday at 4 p.m. in one of the Class AA contests. Tyrone (11-6 overall and 6-4 in the MAC Division III), which completed the regular season on Wednesday by blasting Bishop Guilfoyle 16-3, is the eighth seed, while Westmont-Hilltop is the ninth seed. The winner of that ballgame, will meet top seed Richland at Richland on Monday, May 26.
Tyrone also began district playoffs against Westmont in 2004, regrouping for an 8-7 win after the Hilltoppers had rallied to tie the game at 7-7. The Golden Eagles led early in their quarterfinal game against defending champ Central, before a Dragon rally eliminated Tyrone 12-4.
Blairsville (number 11 seed) will play at West Branch (6), and United (10) will play at Central (7) in the other first round Class AA games.
On Monday, on other games, Bald Eagle Area (5) will play at Bishop McCort (4), the West Branch/Blairsville winner will play at Philipsburg-Osceola (3) and the Central/United winner will play at Marion Center (2) in quarterfinal contests.
West Branch is the only Class AA participant to appear on the Golden Eagles regular schedule. The Warriors topped Tyrone twice, winning 11-7 at West Branch and 9-6 at Tyrone.
In the Class A bracket, Mount Union (14-4-1) drew the top seed, Southern Huntingdon (13-4) the number two seed, Homer-Center is the number three seed and Juniata Valley (11-7) is number four, giving Huntingdon County three of the top four seeds.
On Thursday in Class A, Portage (9) will play at Claysburg-Kimmel (8), and Bishop Guilfoyle (10) will play at Moshannon Valley (7).
In Monday’s Class A quarterfinals, the Portage/Claysburg winner will play at Mount Union, Blacklick Valley (5) will play at Juniata Valley, Northern Cambria (6) will play at Homer Center and the Mo Valley/BG winner will play at Southern Huntingdon.
Mount Union will be gunning for its 15th district title. Although the first 11 came in Class AA, the Trojans won their third Class A crown a year ago by defeating West Branch 2-1, in the championship final. Under long-time head coach Nick Imperioli, Mount Union got off to a 4-3-1 start, before coming on strong to claim the Mountain Athletic Conference Division III championship.
In Class AAA, Somerset (5) will play at Bellefonte (4). On Thursday, May 26, the winner of the Bellefonte/Somerset game will play at Indian Valley.
The Class AAAA championship final between number two seed Hollidaysburg and top seed State College will be played either Wednesday, June 1, or Thursday, June 2 at a site and time to announced.
In Class A, AA and AAA, the semifinals will be at the home field of the team with the higher seed on May 26 and the finals will be at Blair County Ballpark on June 2.
The Tyrone girls softball team (8-10) with coach Lois Loncher, are the 11th seed in the District Six Softball Tournament. The Lady Eagles will play a first round game at Mount Union against the number six seed Lady Trojans.
Tyrone dropped a pair of tough decisions to Mount Union during the regular season falling 4-2 at Mount Union and 2-1 at Tyrone.
The winner of the Tyrone/Mount Union tilt will play at number three seed Philipsburg-Osceola. The Lady Mounties split a pair of regular season contests with the Tyrone girls, winning 5-1 at Philipsburg and the P-O girls doubling up the Lady Eagles 8-4 at Tyrone.
The Lady Eagles shoddy fielding cost them a playoff win in the first round of the 2004 district playoffs in an 8-2 loss to Philipsburg-Osceola.
Also scheduled for first round games on Thursday are Penns Valley (9) at Forest Hills (8) and Ligonier Valley (10) at Cambria Heights (7).
In other quarterfinal Class AA contests on Monday, May 26, the Penns Valley/Forest hills winner will play at top seed Bald Eagle Area, Richland (5) will play at Westmont-Hilltop (4) and the Ligonier Valley/Cambria Heights winner will play at number two seed Central Cambria.
In first round Class A games, Saltsburg (9) will play at Bishop Carroll (8), Bishop Guilfoyle (12) will play at Moshannon Valley (5), Glendale (11) will play at Claysburg-Kimmel (6) and Conemaugh Valley (10) will play at West Branch (7).
All four divisions will play their championship games at Hess Field outside of Boalsburg.
The Class AAA field features just three teams with top seed Bellefonte drawing a bye while Lewistown (3) plays at Indian Valley (2) in a semifinal on May 26.
Class AAAA, newly formed this year, has only two teams, with top seed State College playing number two seed Hollidaysburg at Hess Field, on Tuesday, May 24.
