Hundreds of motorcycle enthusiasts are gearing up for this year’s “Bikers for Barkers” event, an activity designed to raise money for the animals at the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society.
The event is scheduled for next Saturday, July 2. Check-in registration at the shelter location runs from 10 a.m. until noon. The ride will be held rain or shine.
As a main part of the “dice run”, riders will roll dice at the beginning and end of the run and have their scores recorded. Cash prizes will be awarded to the high and low rollers.
In addition to the ride, participants will be treated to music by local blues legend Felix and the Hurricanes.
Those who register will get a “Bikers for Barkers” T-shirt, a DelGrosso barbecue chicken dinner and be eligible for cash prizes and door prizes.
All funds raised at the event go towards helping the homeless animals at the shelter.
Also, the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society is looking to bolster the ranks of its membership rolls. CPHS is currently undertaking an ongoing campaign to attract members.
Executive Director of CPHS, Dave Hopkins, said some dramatic cost increases to the shelter over the past few years make it considerably more difficult to break even financially.
CPHS has added some “incentive benefits” for its members. All current and new members will receive discounts on CPHS merchandise, such as a standing 10 percent off all non-sale items at the thrift shop located on E. Walton Ave. in Altoona and receive discounts on ticket prices to CPHS events.
Members who take advantage of the new discount program will be able to pay for the cost of their membership by using their card a few times, according to Hopkins.
A one-year CPHS membership costs $20 for an individual, $30 for a family and $15 for senior citizens. A junior membership is $10.
New members will immediately be added to membership rosters and start receiving the regular newsletter.
To obtain more information or a membership application, visit the shelter at 1837 E. Pleasant Valley Blvd. in Altoona, go online at www.altoona.net/cphs or phone 942-5402.
