A man police want to question regarding the stabbing death of a six-year-old Tyrone boy remains in an Oklahoma jail on $1 million bond today while authorities continue to work on their investigation.
Nathan Todd Shaw, 25, was caught in Blackwell, OK on Wednesday afternoon after leading police there on a high-speed chase. Shaw eventually crashed the car he was driving and fled on foot before being captured.
Tyrone police have called Shaw “a person of interest” in the death of Jared Klein at a Pennsylvania Avenue residence on Monday night. Klein’s mother, Christina Muoio, was beaten and hospitalized as a result of her injuries.
Shaw was allegedly driving a stolen vehicle that belonged to Muoio when he encountered authorities in Oklahoma. Police received a call about a suspicious vehicle in a church parking lot. When authorities first encountered Shaw they asked him for his driver’s license. Instead of producing it, Shaw took off in the car and led police on the chase that led to the crash and foot pursuit.
Major Joe Ball, Blackwell Police assistant chief, said, “It was amazing he (Shaw) was able to get up and walk away from (the crash).”
Ball said Shaw had told one of the officers involved in his capture to “just shoot me” before he was taken into custody.
After his capture, Shaw was treated for injuries he sustained in the car crash. He was also tested at a hospital, according to a release from the Blackwell City Police Department.
Ball said they were interested in the out-of-state car because of a rash of robberies at churches in the Blackwell area.
Yesterday afternoon, Shaw made his first court appearance in Oklahoma and he was arraigned on charges of eluding an officer/endangering others, reckless driving and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Shaw was held on $1 million bond on those charges.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, police in Oklahoma learned the vehicle Shaw was driving was stolen through a national database system. They also learned he was wanted on a parole violation from Pennsylvania and of Tyrone’s interest in wanting to question Shaw.
After his arraignment, Shaw was transported back to jail in Kay County, OK. Blackwell is located about 60 miles south of Wichita, KS and 95 miles north of Oklahoma City near Interstate 35.
Authorities there are working with Blair County prosecutors regarding what happens to Shaw next. Assistant Blair County DA Rich Consiglio told The Daily Herald there have been preliminary conversations with prosecutors in Oklahoma.
He said prosecutors there have priority over any charges Shaw faces or could face in Pennsylvania. He said that’s because Shaw was arrested there for felony crimes allegedly committed in Oklahoma.
Consiglio said prosecutors there could drop charges, “hold them in abeyance” or proceed with their charges. What Oklahoma authorities decide will determine when Shaw would return to Pennsylvania. For now, he is only wanted here on his parole violation. Shaw was paroled from a state prison in Chester earlier this month after serving less than half of a prison term for theft and assault charges. Tyrone Police have yet to charge Shaw or anyone else in the death of the boy and his mother’s beating. They said this morning that they are making arrangements to have the car that Shaw was driving brought back to Pennsylvania.
Shaw and Muoio are the parents of a two-year-old girl. Muoio has been described as Shaw’s ex-girlfriend. Shaw is not the father of the boy who was killed.
Consiglio said he believed Shaw had agreed to waive extradition in the event of his arrest in another jurisdiction prior to this week’s events. Such an agreement would have been part of Shaw’s previous encounter with the legal system. Consiglio said he could not confirm if such an agreement actually existed. If it does, depending on what prosecutors decide in Oklahoma, Shaw could be brought back to Pennsylvania on the parole violation.
Muoio was listed in serious condition earlier this week at Altoona Regional Medical Center as a result of her injuries. However, this morning, a spokesperson at the hospital said they had no information on a patient by that name.
Funeral arrangements for Jared Klein have been announced and appear on page 2 of today’s Daily Herald.
