The man that police have called “a person of interest” in the investigation of a six-year-old Tyrone boy’s stabbing death was captured in Oklahoma late yesterday afternoon.
Tyrone police want to question 25-year-old Nathan T. Shaw about the killing of Jared Klein on Monday night. The boy died as a result of a single stab wound to the left side of his neck according to autopsy information. Klein’s mother, Christina Muoio, was assaulted during the incident at 1550 Pennsylvania Avenue. She has been hospitalized since the attack.
Tyrone Police were told of Shaw’s capture in Blackwell, OK around 6 p.m. on Wednesday. A press release from Chief Joseph Beachem said the Blackwell City Police Department responded to a suspicious vehicle call at a local church. An officer asked the driver for his license and he was unable to produce it. Instead, the man, later identified as Shaw, fled in the vehicle at a high rate of speed.
The Associated Press reported the chase reached speeds of up to 100 mph, according to Beachem. A pursuit ensued and ended with the crash of the fleeing vehicle. After the crash, a foot chase ensued and Shaw was apprehended.
Police have been looking for Shaw since Monday’s attack and had said he was driving a 1993 red Nissan Sentra. In his latest press release, Chief Beachem said the vehicle belonged to Muoio who has been described as Shaw’s ex-girlfriend. The latest press release said the car Shaw was driving in Oklahoma was Muoio’s.
Beachem said the vehicle was entered into a national database system as being reported stolen on Monday.
Shaw had been paroled on Dec. 5 from the Chester state correctional facility. A spokesperson there said that Shaw was incarcerated on Dec. 21, 2004 and was serving a sentence that was to run until May 29, 2007 before being paroled. A prison official said Shaw was serving time for theft and assault.
An AP report quoted Beachem as saying, “With the recovery of the vehicle, obviously we’re happy some parts of the puzzle are coming together.”
AP reported Oklahoma authorities would extradite Shaw to Pennsylvania on a parole-violation warrant, according to Beachem. He did not know why Shaw was paroled. Beachem also said he didn’t know whether Shaw would fight extradition.
The Kay County, OK Sheriff’s office confirmed Shaw is being held at a county detention center. The Kay County District Attorney’s office could not confirm when Shaw’s first court appearance would be in Oklahoma. They explained paper work for suspects brought into custody yesterday had not yet been processed so they were unable to offer any information on Shaw.
Authorities have not discussed details of the case including a motive or how the boy’s killing happened. They have also not named Shaw or anyone else as a suspect.
Funeral arrangements for Jared Klein were incomplete as of press time and are being handled by the Feller Memorial Home. Jamie DiDomenico, the principal at St. Matthew’s School in Tyrone, told The Daily Herald Klein was a student there. She said counseling would be offered to students. The school is currently on break for the holidays until Monday. She said Klein would have turned seven-years-old in January.
DiDomenico said, “Everyone at St. Matthew’s is praying for Jared’s family in this tragedy.”
She also said “the person who committed the crime” needs prayers and help.
