Philipsburg-Osceola has gone tough and nail with defending PIAA state champion Bald Eagle Area over ther past two softball seasons. The Lady Mounties, in fact defeated Bald Eagle Area twice during the regular season in 2005, only to have the Lady Eagles take the district playoff game between the two foes on their way to PIAA gold. Like BEA. the Lady Mounties return much of their team and have added a few studs in addition.
Tyrone found that fact out on Thursday, traveling to Philipsburg for the return match after falling 5-1 to P-O earlier in the season. This time Katie Confer mowed the Lady Eagles down, allowing just two singles, one to Ashley Pennabaker and one to Stefani Bryan in five innings, and the Philipsburg-Osceola ladies powered nine hits and took advantage of four Tyrone miscues to wrap up a 10-0 victory that ened in five innings due to the 10-run Mercy-rule.
The Lady Mounties broke the game open quickly by scoring five times in the first inning and the Tyrone girls were never able to recover.
“Philipsburg had five straight hits to open up the bottom of the first and two of those hits were doubles. They scored four runs in the first inning and that pretty much set the tone for the game,” explained Tyrone baseball coach Lois Loncher. “ We were not at the top of our game with this being our third game in three days. We are off tomorrow and will be going to the Southern Huntingdon Tournament Saturday.”
Alyssa English, Rachel Yarger, Abby Peangatelli and Danielle Demcheck each drove in two runs for P-O. Gonder and English each hit a double, Kiley Abersold tripled and Peangatelli hit a home run.
Confer fanned five batters and walked one to pick up the win.
Tyrone freshman Laura Thompson walked one and struck out none to take the loss.
