A quiet afternoon on Thursday on the Tyrone track lead to impressive wins against the Juniata Valley Hornets for both Tyrone’s girls and boys track teams on Thursday. While today was not a record setting day for either team, it was a successful day for many people who took tops spots across the score board.
Starting with the men’s dual meet, there was a lot to say for the seniors’ performance yesterday.
Aaron Houck had outstanding times in the 1600 meter and the 3200 meter, placing first in both events. Chris Bradigan finished first in the 400 meter dash as well as taking part in victories in both the 3200 and 1600 meter relays. Trey Brockett won all three jumping events as well as taking part in Tyrone’s winning 400 meter relay. Leonard Wilson took second place in both the shot put and discus, and Adam Shaffer took first in the javelin. Finally, Nathan Barber placed first in the 800 meter run.
The underclassmen men were also a valuable asset to the boys‚ team on Thursday. John Franco placed first in both the 100 and 200 meter dash as well as running in the 400 meter relay. Johnny Shaffer took second in the javelin and Tyler Hoover placed third in the shot put, garnering important points in the field.
The final score for the boys was Tyrone 108, Juniata Valley 42.
“One of the nicest things about the depth we have this year on both boys and girls teams,” said Tyrone track coach Tony Yaniello, “is the younger kids doing such a great job. Nick Wilson for example is primarily a baseball player on the junior varsity, but was a pleasant surprise winning the discus for us. We have some outstanding young runners who are turning in some incredible times. There are 15 freshmen and they are scoring points when they get the opportunity.”
The girls‚ meet, while not as close as the men’s, was still a great win for the Lady Eagles.
Seniors Emily Ingle and Emily Lloyd both pulled in valuable winning points including firsts by Ingle in the 1600 meter run, 800 meter run and 3200 meter run and Lloyd in the 400 meter dash and the high jump. Melissa Hoover placed second in the shotput with Sara Cox a close second. Senior Ashley Turnbaugh placed third in the discus. Senior Katie Schreckengost took first in the javelin.
Again, underclassmen played a valuable role in the girls‚ victory today.
Liz Tepsic had four firsts including the 110 meter high hurdles, 300 meter hurdles, long jump and triple jump. Francesca Lambert placed third in the 1600 meter run and the 800 meter run. Tyrone took two of the three relays in yesterday’s meet. The team of Page Black, Sarah Halter, Francesca Lambert and Selena Bradigan won the 3200 meter relay and the team of Allison Detweiler, Brittany Hosband, Christina Daugherty and Kayla Corle won the 400 meter relay.
The final score in the girls‚ meet was Tyrone 95, Juniata Valley 55.
“Emily Lloyd is one of our girls who can do just about everything on the track and do it well,” explained Yaniello. “However, she runs the same events as Emily Ingle and Liz Tepsic. She ran the 400 for us yesterday and won easily. We have the luxury of having talented people who often don’t get the notice because they are overshadowed by our big guns, but who worl hard and score important seconds and thirds for us in the meets.”
Tyrone faces multiple teams at the annual Bellwood Invitational on May 1. The meet will begin at 3:30 PM.
