The Tyrone Lady Eagles softball team made their annual trip to Orbisonia for the Southern Huntingdon Tournament on Saturday. The Tyrone girls has the dubious honor of opening their tournament against a very tough Claysburg-Kimmel squad that was the eventual winner of the Lady Rockets’ tournament, going on to defeat Southern Huntingdon in the championship game 11-3
Tyrone won the toss in the first game and elected to be home team.
In the opener, Claysburg came out smoking against the Lady Eagles by putting up five runs in the top of the first inning.
Tyrone would come in off the field and get two tallied of their own in the bottom of the first. The Lady Bulldogs came right back with three more in the second and would add an insurance score in the fourth as well.
After the pair of runs in the first inning, Claysburg-Kimmel pitcher Renee Musselman shut out the Lady Eagles over the final six innings for a 9-2 victory.
“We knew that Claysburg was an aggressive team on the bases,” said Tyrone coach Lois Loncher. “We had our chances in the first and second inning to put pressure on them but did not execute.”
Lindsay Christine drove in two runs for the Lady Eagles, and belted a double, and Ashley Pannebaker and Megan Turiano each stroked two hits.
Musselman, who was voted the tournament’s Most Valuable Player struck out eight and walked four to post the win. Laura Thompson fanned four and walked three for the Lady Eagles.

In the first game for the Lady Blue Devils, Southern Huntingdon trounced the B-A girls 16-1. One bright spot for Bellwood-Antis, was a tremendous shot to center field that went for a home run off the bat of freshman catcher Tamara Askey that turned out to be the only run scored by the Lady Blue Devils.
“Southern Huntingdon simply pounded the ball,” explained Bellwood-Antis head coach Alex Sitman. “They hit the gaps, and They were definitely up for that game.”
