The Tyrone Area junior varsity won their third straight ballgame on Monday evening at Wingate, defeating Bald Eagle Area 20-0.
After dropping their opener to Bellwood-Antis 6-3, the junior Eagles defensive unit has shutout their next three opponents, and have now allowed just a grand total of six points to be scored on them in four ballgames.
The aggressive “D” caused four turnovers-interceptions by Levi Reihart and Brandon Gehret and fumble recoveries by Brock Anders and Jesse Walk, and limited Bald Eagle Area to just a single first down for the entire game.
“Again the defense was outstanding,” explained Tyrone junior varsity Darren Elvey. “The guys were flying around to the ball and were making plays. We were very aggressive and this was the best we have hit so far this year. The guys are starting to take it personal if somebody wants to score on us.”
A 12-yard pass from Ben Ingle to Devin Miller for a touchdown capped the Golden Eagles first series and Dustin Rudasill booted the extra point for a fast 7-0 lead.
Then after a turnover gave Tyrone the opportunity, Jeremy Barlett bulled two yards for a touchdown. The PAT failed, but Tyrone upped their advantage to 13-0.
Finally, just before the half, Brady Williams scored on a three-yard run and Rudasill’s PAT kick gave the Eagles a 20-0 lead at halftime.
Neither team was able to score in the final two quarters.
“We’re getting better and better offensively,” said Elvey. “Brady and Jeremy really responded tonight, by running hard, we only had three healthy running backs, who could play, and our O-line opened some great holes. We mixed in some passing here and there and our two quarterbacks (Levi Reihart and Ben Ingle) both made good decisions with the ball.
“Overall, I’m thrilled with the effort of everybody.”
The Tyrone junior varsity (3-1) will play Philipsburg-Osceola on Monday, Oct. 2, at Gray Veterans Memorial Field. Kickoff will be at 6 p.m.
