Three Tyrone Elementary School second graders stopped to check out the display in the LGI room during a special presentation last week. After a recent trip to the circus at the Jaffa Mosque, second graders at Tyrone Elementary School and Saint Matthew School learned of the Walter L. Main Circus train wreck in Vail 115 years ago. Susie O’Brien, who was the special guest presenter, enjoyed sharing information on this historical event which occurred on her family’s farm in Vail in 1893. Along with her presentation on the events, O’Brien also shared her display which includes animal bones and a variety of other items found after the wreck. To continue with the circus theme, second graders also had the opportunity to draw a freehand likeness of the famous clown “Grandma” from the local Adam Forepaugh/Barry Lubin Tent 2 of State College and Altoona areas. Several artists were chosen to receive prizes for their depiction of “Grandma”. (The Daily Herald/Amanda Golden)
