The IRS revealed a new compact model of tax form 1040, during the early part of Oct. 1961, which it claimed would make paying your income taxes easier.
The new form was reduced from four to two pages and was designed to simplify the work load of approximately 16.5 million tax payers. In addition, another 7.5 million tax payers, who in the past had used form 1040W, a two-page form will use the new form instead.
Anther 41 million people have used the long form which called for the listing of income from dividends, interest, pensions and annuities and royalties, depreciation and retirement credits. Those who paid on such income still had to use the long form.
First Blair County National Bank was open from 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Fridays at both the main office at the corner of PA Avenue and 10th Street and at their 12th Street branch, and had been doing business in the Tyrone area since 1874. Rhodes Planing Mill at 1615 Clay Avenue urged the customer to step up the comforts of home by fixing it up with their lumber, mill work, building supplies and Anderson windows. W. C. Morrow and sons at 208 East 10th Street had used farm machinery, including a New Holland Forage Harvester with pick-up and sickle bar, plus heads and corn head available, a Paper Forage Harvester with corn and sickle bar heads, or a John Deere 420 Crawler with blade, plus many more.
At the Wilson Theatre, Rock Hudson, Kirk Douglas, Dorothy Malone, Joseph Cotton, Carol Lynley and Neville Brand were appearing in “The Last Sunset,” on Monday through Wednesday. Beginning Thursday, “Tammy Tell Me True,” starring Sandra Dee and John Gavin was shown through Saturday. At the El Patio, “Cast a Long Shadow,” with Audie Murphy and Terry Moore and “Caltiki, the Immortal Monster,” was showing, with a midnight Friday show featuring “Lead Racers, and “Daddy-O.”
Following the death of former U.N. General Secretary Dag Hammarskjold in a plane crash in Africa, a new interim Secretary in Burma’s U Thant was selected, although the Soviet Union, who had attempted to get Hammarskjold replaced by a group of three people in that influential position held up the action, their repeat request would eventually fail and U Thant would become the permanent Secretary General later in the year.
Whitey Ford passed Babe Ruth for the World Series record of scoreless innings with five more innings of scoreless baseball in the New York Yankees 6-1 win on Sunday, which gave the Yankees a 3-1 lead in the 1961 Series. Ford held the new mark after breaking the Babe’s old mark of 29 and 2/3 scoreless innings when Ruth pitched for the Boston Red Sox in the 1916 and 1918 World Series.
The Cincinnati Reds’ Jim O’Toole matched Ford for three innings, but the Yankees combined a walking to home run king Roger Maris, who had slugged 61 during the regular season to break Ruth’s most famous record, a long single by Mickey Mantle and an RBI single by New York catcher Elston Howard. In the fifth, O’Toole got himself in trouble by walking Ford and the Yankees shortstop-second base combo Tony Kubek and Bobby Richardson hit back-to-back singles to put New York in front 2-0.
With Game Two winner Joey Jay on the mound on Monday, Cincinnati hoped to keep the Series going, but the Yankees battered the Reds 13-5 to win in five games.
The Yankees never let Jay out of the first inning with John Blanchard, subbing for the injured Mantle, clubbing a two-run homer to lead the way.
A three-run homer by the Reds’ Frank Robinson pulled Cincinnati to within three runs in the third, but reliever Bud Daily limited the Reds to only a pair of unearned runs after that.
It was the Yankees first World Series title in three years, and the first for new Yankee manager Ralph Houck, following the Pittsburgh Pirates 1960 championship in which the key hit was a home run by Pirate second baseman Bill Mazeroski in Game Seven that won the game and the series. Ford was named the 1961 AL Pitcher of the Year, while Jay was named the NL Comeback Player of the Year. Cincinnati manager Fred Hutchinson was named the NL Manager of the Year.
On the gridiron, Tyrone (6-1) assured itself of its first winning season in five years by whipping Clearfield 40-7 at Gray Field, on Friday, Oct. 20, 1961.
With two players out of the game and a third done for the season, the Eagles regrouped and played like all were veterans.
Carl White, a junior, moved under center to replace Tom Miller, who suited up, but saw no action, while White completed 11 of 19 passes for 154 yards with two going for touchdowns and rushed six times for an additional 32 yards. Ron Cramer, a halfback, who had been out since the Huntingdon game, returned to action and took the load off Chet Wolford, running the ball 15 times for 75 yards and two TDs.
Starting left end Bill Elder had his arm in a sling, and guard Sheldon Harper had been ruled out for the season.
Wolford increased his point total to 99 for the season, with three touchdowns scores and two extra points. He then had a total of 16 TDs.
The Eagle scored four of the first five times they had the football, taking a 27-0 lead into the halftime intermission.
Cramer plunged three yards for the opening score to cap a 52-yard drive. Gary Greene set up the score by returning the opening kick 29 yards to the T-48. Cramer had the long gainer with an 11-yard sprint. Wolford rushed for the PAT.
The Eagles then marched 74 yards, picking up five first downs along the way, with Cramer going one yard for the score.
Dale Frye recovered a Clearfield fumble on the Bison-31 to set up the third tally. On the sixth play of the drive, Wolford blasted in for the one-yard TD and caught a pass from White for the extra point.
Bob Snyder and Greene blocked a punt and Dick Hoyne recovered to give the Eagles the ball at the C-37. Wolford crashed over for the five-yard TD and added the PAT run.
In the third quarter, Dale Ray recovered a fumble at the C-26 and Tyrone was back in business again. White passed to Green for the nine-yard TD, and sandy Naylor rushed for the point-after.
Following Clearfield’s only score, Tyrone added one more TD. White hit Wolford with a short screen pass and Wolford turned it into a 51-yard TD.
Wolford rushed for 124 yards on 22 carries, as the Orange and Black totaled 305 yards rushing and 154 through the air for a combined total offense of 459 yards.
