TACO opens 15-16 VFW season with win
The Tyrone TACO club opened play in the Area 4 VFW Teener League in good style, exploding for all their runs in the second inning in a 7-4 victory over Club Altoona.
After a scoreless first inning, TACO started slowly, then unloaded. With one out, Jordan Faretta, Ridge Colyer and Austin Barefoot walked to fill the bases. Cody Smith drew another free pass to score Faretta, and Derrick Emigh walked to score Colyer. Korry Cowher got Barefoot home with an infield hit, before Derek dasher cleared the bases by clouting a double. Evan Brush ended the inning by grounding out, but all the damage TACO pitchers Barefoot, Doug Rudy and Cowher would need.
Club Altoona started in the top of the third stanza. Greg Hughes had a base hit and with one out Cory Myers walked and Drew McCabe reached on an error that scored Hughes. With two down, Josh King drilled a clutch two-run single that scored Myers and McCabe. Barefoot, the TACO starter, fanned Henderson to get out of the inning still leading 7-3.
In the top of the fifth, McCabe was hit by a pitch from Barefoot and Wombacher reached on an error. McCabe scored the final Altoona run of the game on an RBI fielder’s choice by King.
The last two innings were scoreless with TACO recording the win. Barefoot pitched 4 and 1/3 innings to pick up the win, allowing all four Altoona runs, all unearned. Rudy tossed 1 and 2/3 scoreless innings to pick up a hold, and Cowher pitched the scoreless seventh to record the save.
Tyler Ferguson took the loss for Club Altoona. Dasher and Cowher clubbed doubles. Dasher had three RBI, and Emigh, Rudy and Cowher all had one RBI each.
