The Tyrone BassMasters Club opened their 2008 campaign this past weekend, fishing two out-of-state waters with a dozen members fishing.
On Saturday, May 17, the club fished Deep Creek Lake in Maryland. They were greeted by 25 mile-per-hour sustained winds, which lasted through the entire tournament. Although conditions were poor at best, all 12 members successfully landed bass. A total of 42 bass were brought to the scales, and six members had their five-fish limits. All-in-all, it was a good tournament for the Tyrone BassMasters.
The winners were: C. Mattern of Bellwood, in first place with five fish for a total of 9.35 pounds, M. Weiko of Water Street, with five fish for 7.98 pounds, third place was R. Rawlings of Mill Creek, with five fish totaling 7.42 pounds and fourth place T. Sanker of Altoona, with five fish totaling 6.74 pounds. B. Fink of Tyrone, had the lunker -a 3 pound largemouth bass.
On Sunday, May 18, the club moved to Cheat lake in West Virginia, for their second tournament, where they were met by heavy rain and muddy water, followed by high winds when the rain finally ceased.
Conditions affected the fishing, with only 13 bass caught, that reached the scales, by nine members. There were no five-fish limits caught.
The top winners were: M. Weiko of Water Street, with one fish weighing in at 4.45 pounds, N. Nagl of Altoona, was second with three fish totaling 2.71 pounds, and J. Kaspick of Tyrone, and C. Mattern of Bellwood, were third with one fish each weighing 1.92 pounds. Weiko’s fish was also the lunker, a largemouth bass.
After the first two tournaments, M. Weiko holds the overall lead with 53 points, followed closely by C. Mattern with 52 points.
The next scheduled event for the Tyrone BassMasters will be a night tournament on Sayers Lake, on June 27.
