Tyrone Borough Council and Mayor Jim Kilmartin were presented with a panel of Colonel James Crowther by Colonel Crowther Foundation President Bob Hileman, Jr. this past Monday.
The panel was an exact replica of the original panel that was placed on the National Park Service’s Wall of Honor on Saturday, October 11 in Chancellorsville, Virginia.
The Wall of Honor, located at the Chancellorsville Battlefield Visitors Center, contains panels that honor persons who performed outstanding service at the Battle of Chancellorsville. On hand for the ceremony was National Park Service Supervising Historian Greg Mertz and Colonel Crowther Foundation Directors James Crowther, Carol Hileman, and President Bob Hileman, Jr.
Colonel James Crowther is the highest-ranking officer buried in Fredericksburg National Cemetery. A former Burgess of Tyrone, PA., Crowther died on May 3, 1863, while gallantly attempting to hold back the fierce Confederate onslaught at Chancellorsville. “His death is much regretted,” wrote his commanding officer. “He was a brave and fearless soldier, esteemed by all.”
The Colonel Crowther Foundation hopes that the panel will be placed at a location of honor here as in Chancellorsville. A location where it can be viewed by all citizens of the borough helping them to become aware of the contribution made by this founding father of the community.
