Mrs. Nadine S. Batcheler, age 96, a former Birmingham resident, died Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at Epworth Manor. She was born November 5, 1911 in Roaring Spring, the daughter of Blaine K. and Lola Smith Stewart. On July 18, 1947 at the bride’s home, she was married to Lorain R. Batcheler who preceded her in death January 8, 1995. She is survived by a niece, Nadine Stewart, wife of David Zydallis of New York City, a nephew, Bruce K. Stewart and wife Lou of Ashville, NC, and a sister-in-law, Ruth McUne Stewart of Bradenton, FL. A brother, B. Keller Stewart, preceded her in death.
She was a member of the Birmingham Presbyterian Church where she had served as a trustee. She was a former member of the Blair County Women’s Club. She was a graduate of the Grier School in 1929, received a B.A. from Brenau College of Gainsville, GA in 1933, and had attended graduate school at Penn State University in 1943.
She taught health for the Tyrone Area School District for one year, from 1939 until 1947, was Director of Health and Physical Education for Tyrone Area School District. Following her retirement, with her husband, she owned and operated Batcheler Tours and Educational Field Trips.
A memorial service for Mrs. Batcheler will be held Saturday, November 15, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Birmingham Presbyterian Church with Reverend Barry Vance officiating. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
