Martin Oil used back-to-back four-run innings in the middle of the game to pound out a 10-6 win over Sheetz in the George B. Kelley Federation on Tuesday evening at Stadium Drive Field in Bellwood.
After Sheetz scored first in the top of the third inning on consecutive doubles by number nine hitter Kyle Sheriden and lead off batter Micah Dillen, Martin Oil took the lead in the bottom half of the third.
With one out, Jake Manning drew a walk, and Brian Hostler doubled him to third. Nate Gray walked to load the bases. After losing pitcher Tom Hoover retired Earnie Kelley on a pop fly, Trey Mock delivered both Manning and Hostler with a clutch two-out single. Designated hitter Cameron Irvin dropped a soft single into center that scored Gray and Chad Coho got Mock home with a single to left.
Sheetz knocked Martin Oil starter Mock out with four runs in the top of the fourth, although the Martin Oil defense committed three errors to make all four tallies unearned. Aaron Schmitt knocked in two runs with a double for the key hit.
Not giving in however, Martin Oil retook the lead in their half of the inning, with four more runs.
Matt Hinton singled to left to begin the frame. Manning was safe on an error and Gray scored Hinton with a sacrifice fly to tie the game 5-5. Kelley was hit by a pitch. Mock singled with two outs to score Manning and Kelley and Mock scored on two straight Sheetz errors.
Martin Oil also added two scores in the fifth inning. Manning singled up the middle with one out and came around to score on a stolen base and an error. Gray blasted a triple to left and scored on a single by Kelley for a 10-5 Martin Oil advantage.
Hostler relieved Mock on the mound for Martin Oil with two down in the fourth and pitched scoreless baseball through the Sheetz fifth and sixth to pick up the win. Kelley pitched the seventh, allowing one run with two strikeouts and one walk. Mock went the first three and 2/3 innings allowing five runs, one earned on five hits with one strikeout and two walks. Hostler fanned one and walked none.
“We’ve been talking about the need to play with some heart,” explained Martin Oil manager Ed Davis. “I think our kids are starting to get the idea. We had a little adversity there, got behind, but Trey pitched a good three-plus innings for us and then Hostler and Earnie and finished up the job.
“Nate had a good day at the plate, Trey had a couple real-clutch two-out hits. We are starting to come around a little bit. We will see tomorrow when we play Corporal Miller just how much they have come back.”
Jim Sommer had a perfect four-for-four night at the plate for Sheetz with four straight singles.
Martin Oil travels to Altoona Vets Field to play Corporal Miller in the rubber match between the two federation teams today at 5:30 p.m. Martin Oil won the first meeting 9-6 and then Corporal Miller outlasted Martin Oil last week 16-15.
