After several heavy thunderstorms made their way through the Borough of Tyrone between 5:30 and 6:30 this past Wednesday afternoon, the players from the Kiwanis 13 & 14 year-old teener league baseball team along with Charlie Kirkpatrick made the statement that they thought they could fix up the field for play that evening. With everyone, or nearly everyone at Ferner Field thinking that there was no way anybody would be able to play the game after receiving over an inch of rain just minutes before, but by 8:15 PM, the boys and Charlie had proven their point and after some hard work, the game was able to be played!
The Tyrone Kiwanis team came into the contest with an eight-game regular season win streak and second place overall finish in the Area 4 VFW Teener League Regular Season Standings and were eager to continue on their winning ways.
The contest was against the Leap & Associates team from Hollidaysburg, who had won in the initial round of the playoffs several nights before.
Korry Cowher, who came into the game with a 6-1 pitching record, got the nod on the mound, while Tyler Hennessey was the starting pitcher for Leap. Both pitchers would go the distance with Cowher earning his seventh pitching victory in eight starts by a score of 7-2. Cowher allowed only three hits in seven innings and recorded seven strike-outs.
The scoring started in the bottom half of the first inning, when JD Dorminy reached first base on an error JD then stole second base and scored on a single by Caleb Snyder who stole second and scored on a single by Korry Cowher to make it 2-0 after one inning of play.
There was no further scoring until the fourth inning, when Cowher doubled in the lead off spot, Miller singled and then both moved up on stolen bases. After a strike out, Derrick Fisher attempted to lay down a bunt on the first base side. The ball was caught in the air by the first basemen, which was the second out. He then attempted a throw to third base, which was off target and ended up scoring Cowher and Miller to make the score 4-0.
In the fifth inning, after two outs were recorded, Dorminy hit a double, then stole third base. Caleb Snyder earned a walk and then stole second base. Cowher then hit a double over the left fielder\’s head to score both Dorminy and Snyder. Miller singled in Cowher to plate the third run of the inning and also making the score 7-0 at the end of five.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Leap & Associates scored their only two runs of the ball game.
Cowher led the Kiwanis team with three of the 10 hits including a pair of doubles. Dormany and Miller each had two hits as well to spearhead the offensive performance
With the victory, the Kiwanis Team advances to a Best of Three Semi-final Round, which will likely begin on Saturday morning at Ferner Field.
