Sac bunt

Andrew Ford lays down a sacrifice bunt on an Earnie Kelley pitch in Hoss’s half of the seventh inning at Bellwood on Friday evening. Kelley pitched out of a bases-loaded situation and Martin Oil swatted 13 hits to pick up the 12-8 win. (The Daily Herald/Stacey Manning)

Martin Oil scored three times in the bottom of the first to take the early lead, but needed to score seven times in their final two at-bats to carve out a 12-8 win over Hoss’s at Stadium Drive Field in Bellwood on Friday evening in the George B. Kelley Federation.
The hosts, as they have done so often this season, allowed their opponent to come back and not just make it interesting, but even take an 8-7 lead. Three of the runners who scored for Hoss’s got on base on walks, and three more reached base on Martin Oil errors.
Jake Manning walked and Brian Hostler beat out a bunt to put runners at first and second in the Martin Oil first. Nate Gray singled to right to get Manning home with the first run, Cameron Irvin scored Jared Coho courtesy running for starting pitcher Hostler, with an RBI groundout, and Trey Mock singled up the middle to drive home Gray.
Hoss’s scored an unearned run in the second inning and Hoss’s pitcher Derrick Coppersmith drove in another in the third to slice the Martin Oil lead to 3-2.
Martin Oil tallied a pair of scores in the bottom of the third, but Hoss’s came right back tacking advantage of four walks and a Martin Oil error to score five runs in the top of the fourth to take a 7-5 advantage.
The hosts regained a two run lead in the bottom of the third. Hostler walked, one of three free passes in the game for Brian, and raced around to third base on a error by Coppersmith, who tried to pick him off first base. Gray ripped a double to score Hostler and scored two batters later on a single to left by Irvin.
Hoss’s upped their lead to 8-5 with another unearned run in the fifth.
Martin Oil kept on hammering the ball. Earnie Kelley singled, stole second and came around to score in the fifth, on a single by Chad Coho. A single by Justin Miller scored Coho and Miller was driven in by a base hit by Manning to tie the score, 8-8.
Matching ace-against-ace, Kelley limited Hoss’s to one unearned run on one hit over the final two innings, while Martin Oil knocked 16-year old Andrew Ford around for four runs in the bottom of the sixth for the win.
Hostler walked, moved up to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Gray, who stole second base. Irvin walked and Chad Coho singled to right to score Gray. Irvin scored on a wild pitch and Coho came across the plate on an error to set the final score.
Kelley, who struck out three and walked two, fanned Andy Menard for the final out with the bases loaded to pick up the victory.
“Unfortunately we booted the ball around a little and Hostler was a little wild, giving up five walks,” said Martin Oil manager Ed Davis. “But all-in-all, I was still pleased with the way our kids hung in there. We got behind, after jumping out early. The kids didn’t get down on themselves, they hung in there and we came back to win.
“Jake Manning again led the way with two hits and a walk, Brian Hostler walked three times and was on base on a big bunt. Nate Gray is doing a super job with three more hits and three RBI. Earnie got robbed in the first inning, but moved runners up. Chad Coho is starting to hit, he had a couple hits and a couple RBI. It was a real team win, everybody contributed.”
Derrick Coppersmith drove in two runs for Hoss’s and Brandon Marsaco and Barry Smith each had two hits.
