The Tyrone Area School Board of Directors conducted its regular business session last night at the school board room. One of the items approved by the board was the disciplinary action taken against a ninth grade student.
The student was charged with insubordination, harassment and disruption of class.
“The ninth grade student refused to be examined by the school nurse and refused to remain on the bus following a slight mishap between a school bus and a vehicle,” said Tyrone Superintendent of Schools Dr. William Miller. “The student also walked off the bus which is a violation of the school rules. The student was also charged with harassment and disruption of class for threatening to blast another student and assaulting the student in class. Charges have been filed against the student.”
The board voted unanimously to expel the student for the remainder of the 2002-03 school year and the school district will provide instruction in the home for the student in the four basic subjects.
The board voted to approve Dr. Robert (Wilson) Charles as the graduation speaker. He was a 1963 honors graduate of Tyrone High School. In the past 40 years he has distinguished himself as a scout, scholar, soldier and scientist.
Charles is a graduate of Bucknell University and received a Doctorate in Geology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
He worked as a research scientist at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico until his retirement in 1997. During his 23 years at Los Alamos, he wrote more than 100 scientific publications.
Charles will address the Class of 2003 at their commencement on June 4.
The board also accepted the low bid of $9,170 to Fabian and McKeehan Masonry for the signage to be placed at the Harry K. Sickler Jr. Athletic Park. The sign will have the same type stone as the wall at Gray/Vets Memorial Field.
The board approved the moving of the April board meeting to April 1. The change is due to the superintendent and assistant superintendent attending the Safe Schools, Healthy Students conference.
The board unanimously voted to approve the revisions to Automatic External Defibulator Policy and the locations of the defibulators on the school grounds.
