E. Gertrude Cherry, 87, of Valley View Home and formerly of 309 S. Fourth St., Bellwood, died Thursday morning, Nov. 28, 2002 at the home.
She was born on Sept. 5, 1915 in Snyder Township, a daughter of the late Philip Elmer and Bessie May (Waite) Gebhart. She married John G. Cherry on Feb. 14, 1934 in Birmingham. He died Nov. 10, 2002.
Surviving are two daughters; Doris M. Collier of Bellwood and son-in-law Harlyn James Collier of Bellwood, and Elaine G. Kavanagh and husband John of Newbury Park, Calif; two sons, The Rev. Philip R. Cherry and his wife Janet of Downingtown and James D. Cherry and his wife Carol of Tyrone RD 2; a daughter-in-law, Danalee Sluder of Texico, N.M.; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a brother, Wilmer “Buster” Gebhart of Tyrone and a sister, Winifred Lauder of Warriors Mark.
She was preceded in death by a son, Wayne John Cherry, who died Sept. 21, 1975; and by grandchildren Amy L Collier and Don Wayne Cherry.
Mrs. Cherry retired Sept. 9, 1977 as a seamstress from Tritex Sportswear Inc., of Altoona.
She was a member of the Olivet Baptist Church in Bellwood, where she was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the choir. She also taught Sunday School and sang in the choir at Logan Valley Baptist Church in Bellwood. Mrs. Cherry enjoyed sewing, knitting and travel.
Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, at the Jon C. Russin Funeral Home in Bellwood. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002 at the funeral home with the Rev. Philip R. Cherry and the Rev. Kenneth Beichler officiating. Interment will be made at Blair Memorial Park in Antis Township.
