The Birmingham Presbyterian Church has scheduled a community yard sale on the church lawn on Saturday, July 12 from 9 a.m. until everything sells.
In case of rain, the yard sale will be held inside the church basement.
Residents of Birmingham and Grier School are encouraged to join the members of the church by bringing items to sell on the church lawn. If there is too much to carry, setting up a table in the yards around Birmingham is also encouraged.
Coordinator of ministries Kim Witkovsky said the purpose of the yard sale is to bring the members of the Birmingham community together for a day of fun and fellowship.
The church will not make any money from the items sold at the yard sale, since participants will be selling their own household materials, whether it be on the church lawn or on their own lawns.
The ladies of the church will be having a bake sale as well as selling hot dogs, sauerkraut and cold drinks at the church as their only fundraiser for the day.
So the children won’t feel left out, while everyone is shopping around, Witkovsky is planning to have a kid’s table set up at the church with face painting available as well as some penny candy and other kid’s items.
This is the first-ever community yard sale planned for Birmingham, and Witkovsky said it is just another way to do activities to include the community with the church, like the Gospelfest and hymn sing held last night at the church.
Elaine Pletcher, Don Zeoli and Larry Green make up the Amen Express, the featured musical group for the evening. The event was to be held on the church lawn, but because of the rain showers, it was moved inside the church.
The Amen Express had previously performed at Birmingham Presbyterian in June and have agreed to come back sometime in August.
In other church news, summer worship has been moved to 10 a.m., and children’s/youth Sunday school has been moved to 9 a.m.
The fundraising campaign for the new piano for the church is continuing. The congregation has raised $700 of the $2,000 for the piano.
The piano is already in the upstairs of the church, and Witkovsky said it has added to the music. It is the first digital piano for the upstairs in the history of the church because the upstairs only ever had an organ until now.
A program for kids ages four to 15 is held every Thursday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The children meet at the church for scriptures, stories, songs and snacks. The program is scheduled through August 21.
Witkovsky said the kid’s program is a combined Sunday school and Bible School, and it is held during the week so the children can have an easier time in attending.
The Birmingham Presbyterian Church also has a growing newsletter that is sent to more than 120 homes.
