Tyrone and Bald Eagle Area battled down to the wire on Wednesday night at Wingate, with the game not being decided until the final second.
Bald Eagle Area’s Ryan Decker popped in a basket with one second to play, with Tyrone Leonard Wilson hanging all over him to give his Bald Eagles the 47-45 win over the Tyrone Golden Eagles.
Tyrone jumped out to a seven-point first period lead 16-9, but BEA used scoring margins in each of the final three quarters, including a 16-12 fourth stanza margin to put away the Orange and Black.
Leonard Wilson led Tyrone on offense with 11 points, Kevin Hershberger contributed 10 and Tadd Chamberlain and Nick Cushion each scored eight points.
Decker led Bald Eagle Area, who improved to 6-6 overall, with a dozen points.
“We finally put together four solid quarters,” said Tyrone coach Mike Harris. “We had a lot of positives. We played well, went 11-13 at the foul line, played good defense. Leonard Wilson was all over Decker on his last-second try and he just made a terrific shot. We didn’t give this one away. We made Bald Eagle Area beat us, unfortunately the shot went in.”
BEA cut into the Tyrone lead slicing the advantage to 26-20 at the half and 33-31 after three quarters, before getting dead even with only time for the final shot.
“We still made a couple poor decisions with the ball,” said Harris. “We have been working on getting our guys to take better shots, to take what the defense gives them and not force things. Tonight, we just came up short. That happens.”
Tyrone (2-4 in Mountain League, 4-8 overall) is on the road on Friday night, traveling to Philipsburg-Osceola to battle the Mounties. Junior varsity action will begin at 6 p.m. with the varsity to follow at 7:30.
