State Sen. Robert C. Jubelirer and State Rep. Jerry A. Stern announced yesterday that there are two state grants on the way to assist in the operation of the Blair County recycling programs.
A $466,300 grant will be used to purchase machinery and vehicles and to provide for education programs. A $20,200 grant will cover 50 percent of the county recycling coordinator’s salary and expenses.
Jubelirer said that these funds reflect a continued commitment of the commonwealth to reduce waster going into landfills.
“In order to be successful, it must be easy and accessible for residents,” said Jubelirer. “This grant will help educate the public and will provide the financial support to make recycling available in communities; ultimately reducing the waste going in to the landfill.”
“Recycling is something every person, business and community can and should do to preserve the environment, reduce energy consumption, and protect our natural resources,” Stern said. “This funding will help educate residents on what can be recycled and how, and provide the county with the equipment needed to manage products for recycling.”
“Meeting or surpassing the state goal of 25 percent for statewide recycling is not an easy task and can only happen when individuals and families begin the recycling in their homes,” Jubelirer added.
