Blair Senior Services and Bon Secours-Holy Family Hospital are sponsoring the 24th annual Senior Health Fair on Tuesday, April 20 from 8 a.m. to noon at the former Station Mall in Altoona.
Admission is free, and all area seniors are encouraged to attend to find out more about the numerous helpful ways to improve their health and wellness, according to Blair Senior Services representative Mike Smith.
Free giveaways and door prizes will be available for those who attend.
Over 50 exhibitors will be on-hand at the senior health fair to provide a wide variety of health-related information, demonstrations, presentations and screenings.
Exhibitors will be from areas of medication management, physical medicine and rehabilitation services, exercise and physical activity, just to name a few.
Those participants from the Tyrone area include: Tyrone Colonial Courtyard, Tyrone Hospital and the Women’s Center of Tyrone.
Representatives from Blair Senior Services will also be at the fair to discuss the many in-home services that are available through the Agency.
Other highlights of exhibitors include: mini-massages, the Classic Clown Club doing face painting and Experience Works of Altoona with an informative presentation for lower income individuals and the availability of eye glasses at a reduced price.
Smith said this is the only senior health fair that Blair Senior Services sponsors all year.
“A lot of Blair County is rural, like Tyrone, so we try to bring as many businesses together in one place to get the information out to help people,” added Smith of the purpose of the senior health fair.
Also featured at the fair will be a 32-panel blood screening, offered by Bon Secours-Holy Family Hospital. The screening will include tests that may assist in the early detection of some of the most common health risks facing older adults.
The screening includes tests for diabetes, cholesterol, kidney and liver disease, anemia and more.
The screening is available for $32, and men can add an optional prostate screening for a fee of $20. All test results will be forwarded to the individual’s personal medical provider.
A 12-hour fast is required before the test, but a free breakfast will be available to all participants after the screening.
Interested individuals may register for the screening by calling Bon Secours Holy-Family Hospital at 949-4255. Appointments for the blood screening begin at 7 a.m.
