There are still 126 days until the annual “Backyard Brawl” at Gray Veterans Field. On Tuesday at the Tyrone track complex, the two neighboring rivals got together for the track and field edition. As Keith Jackson would say, it was a good ‘un. On a warm sunny afternoon, visiting Bellwood-Antis used a commanding 31-1 advantage in the distance races (800, 4X800 relay, 1600, and 3200) to edge Tyrone 78-72.
“When Tyrone and Bellwood get together, it’s always tough. Our distance guys really came up big today, a lot of credit should go to them.” said BA coach Nick Lovrich.
While the Blue Devils were having success on the track, the Golden Eagle field performers were putting on their own show, winning all of the field events and holding a 45-18 advantage.
”There is no shame in losing like that. Ron Miller( shot put), Adam Shaffer (javelin), and Evan Stover (pole vault), all put up personal bests today. We had the effort, we were just a little short.” reported Tyrone coach Tony Yaniello.
Tyrone did manage to win 10 of the 18 events, led by two wins from Tom Crowl (400, and long jump), individual winners for the Eagles were Evan Stover (pole vault), Justin Wilson (high jump), Adam Shaffer (javelin), Ron Miller (shot), Leonard Wilson (triple jump), and Terry Tate (discus).
Bellwood-Antis (7-1) got double wins from Aaron Bell (800 and 1600), Dan Houser (100 and 200), and Matt Plummer (110 HH and 300 IM). B-A’s other individual winner was Will Edwards (3200). The Blue Devils also won the 3200 relay with the team of Evan Hughes, Jon Somerton, Chris Edmiston and Corey Sweigert.
Tyrone will host Huntingdon and Philipsburg in a tri-meet Thursday beginning at 4 p.m., before visiting Bellwood Monday for the MAC Championships.
Bellwood-Antis will host Juniata Valley at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday.
The Lady Blue Devils overpowered the Lady Eagles 113-37, winning 14 of the 18 events.
Emily Lloyd won both the long and triple jumps, Marissa Hoover the javelin, and Emily Ingle the 400, to account for Tyrone’s’ four wins. The Tyrone girls fall to 0-4.
”We don’t have the numbers, but I like the girls we have, and I love the effort they give every time out,” professed coach Yaniello. ”Emily Lloyd in the triple and Marissa in the javelin, had personal bests today,” Yaniello reports.
For the Lady Blue Devils, Ashley Mueller won the 100 dash and 100 hurdles, Allison Cherry won the 800 and 1600 runs, and Katie Gardner won the shot put and discuss to lead the way for B-A which improved to 6-2 overall. Lauren Carter won the 300 intermediate hurdles for the B-A girls, Erica Greene took the 200 dash, Stephanie Hatch in her first meet back won the high jump and Allison Sinisi won the pole vault.
Bellwood-Antis took all three relay events. Lindsey Claar, Katie Palmer, Arin Cherry and Allison Cherry won the 3200, Jenna Ralston, Carter, Lauren Leap, and Allison Cherry ran the 1600 and Haley Crider, Carter, Erica Greene and Ashley Mueller won the 400 relay.
“It was simple a matter of numbers,” said B-A girls coach Julie Roseborough. “Tyrone had some good individuals who did a nice job, but lack of numbers of girls hurt them. We had a number of double winners who highlighted the win for us. It was good to get Stephanie Hatch back. We will keep breaking her in gradually.”
