Bellwood-Antis shortstop Becka Forney crashed a three-run home run in the top of the fifth inning on Wdnesday at Williamsburg to provide the big hit for the Lady Blue Devils (1-8), who won their first game of the season.
Forney, Chelsea Kephart and Danielle Riley each had two hits for Bellwood-Antis. Kephart, Kerstin Myers, Alycia O’Donald and Christine Pfahler slammed doubles and Forney drove in four runs, Pam Weyant two, and winning pitcher Heather Detwiler and Riley had one RBI each.
B-A put up three second-ining runs to put the pressure on the Lady Pirates early. Christine Pfahler opened the inning with a double and Chelsea Kephart, Pam Weyant and Forney followed with singles.
Forney gave the Bellwood-Antis girls a jumpstart in the first, walking to open the game, stealing second base and coming all the way around to score on an error on the play. Kerstin Myers added a six-inning run with a sacrifice fly.
“Becka Forney had a great day,” said first-year head Belleood-Antis coach Alex Sitman, who also picked up his first victory. “She has been a leader for us and we look for her to do this. This one has been a long time coming. Hopefully we can build on this and be competitive. The girls have been working hard and deserve to get this win. Charlie Burbs did a greatr job behind the plate. Her arm kept Williamsburg from running all over the bases once they got on. A single was only one base, with Charlie back there. Dani Riley had a nice game-she made a nice defensive play and she laid down a beautiful bunt in the sixth that caught Williamsburg completely by surprise. Pam Weyant came through for us. She can really fly on the bases. We bat her ninth in the order so she can get on base foe Becka and the top of the lineup to bring around. Heather Detwiler pitched a great game, her best of the year. She only walked two batters and struck out five.”
Williamsburg scored once in the fifth and three times in the sixth, but couldn’t get any closer.
Detwiler, picked up the win, going the distance, giving up five runs on eight hits, striking out a season-high five batters and walking three.
Bellwood-Antis (1-8) hosts a tough Mount Union team on Friday. The first pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.
