In a 6-4 loss to MAC-leading West Branch in April, Tyrone manager Tom Coleman felt his team booted away a golden opportunity.
The Eagles committed nine errors leading to six unearned runs and lost for the first time this season.
Tyrone’s fielding was equally as abysmal yesterday, but the homestanding Warriors showed emphatically that they don’t need any charity to win a big game. West Branch defeated the slumping Eagles 16-1 in Lanse, in a game suspended after three innings by the 15-run Mercy Rule. It was the second time in a week Tyrone was dealt a loss of 10 runs or more.
The loss dropped Tyrone to 9-5 overall after a 7-1 start. The Eagles have lost four of their last seven and have allowed 10 or more runs in three of their last four games. Their six errors yesterday against the Warriors brought their season total to 41, an average of three a game.
Colt Viehdorfer was the winner, allowing just two Tyrone hits. He struck out two and walked none while his teammates committed zero errors.
Max Soellner dropped his second consecutive start, pitching 2 1/3 innings. He walked five and allowed nine hits, leading to 11 earned runs.
Every West Branch hitter contributed positively to the Warriors’ offensive effort, beginning in the first inning when they scored seven runs. The Eagles committed three errors, Soellner walked three, and Dylan Viehdorfer smacked a two-run double.
After a two-run second, West Branch put up another seven-spot in the third, thanks to two more Golden Eagle errors and run-scoring doubles by Jimmy Moslak and Marco Amato.
Tyrone’s only run came in the top of the third when Derrick Soellner belted a solo home run, his first of the season.
Tyrone is back in action today in another MAC Division III game, at Bellwood-Antis at 4:30 p.m.
