Tyrone and Bellwood-Antis fought it out for the Mountain Conference Meet title at Bellwood on Monday afternoon before the Blue Devils’ depth made the difference 183-142. Juniata Valley finished third with 72 points, Philipsburg-Osceola was fourth with 57, Huntingdon fifth with 52, Mount Union sixth with 34 and Southern Huntingdon seventh with nine points.
The two local schools combined to take all three Outstanding Athlete awards. Tom Crowl won the Outstanding jumper award, Dan Houser won the Outstanding Runner award and Matt Plummer won the Outstanding Thrower award
Continuing to wage a friendly rivalry, Tyrone’s Tom Crowl and Bellwood-Antis’ Dan Houser stole the show from just about everybody else, at least in the running and jumping events. Each won two individual firsts and each ran a leg on a place winning relay as well.
Crowl defeated the top seeded Houser in the long jump by three inches, and set a school record in the 400. Crowl’s time of 50.69 broke the old mark set by Marcus Owens in 1997. Tommy also was a member of the 400 and 1600 relay teams, both of which finished second.
“Tommy broke the school record in the 400 and seems to be peaking at just the right time,” said Tyrone track coach Tony Yaniello. There are about four other guys who will be at the districts who are close in times, so he can’t afford to let up. That was a nice win for Tommy over Danny Houser in the long jump. They have been battling all season. We got quite a few of our points from our jumpers. The kids are starting to step up at the end of the season, which is just the right time.”
Houser won the 100 dash, besting Crowl, and the 200 dash, as well as anchoring the Blue Devils’ winning 400 relay team.
Plummer won the discus for the Blue Devils and was second in the high hurdles and third in the intermediate hurdles.
The Blue Devils biggest advantage was their depth. B-A placed in all 18 events, with Aaron Bell winning the 1600 run, Tyler Narehood the shot put and Matt Plummer the discuss, in addition to Houser and placed more than one person in 13 of the 15 individual events. In the 800 Corey Sweigert was third, Evan Hughes fourth and Chris Edmiston fifth. In the 1600 bell was first, Elliot Geist fourth and Will Edwards fifth. The 300 IM hurdles had Matt Plummer second, Eric Chamberlin fifth and Adam Mueller sixth. Behind Narehood in the shot put, Tony DelGrosso was fifth and Joe Noel was sixth. Finally in the javelin, Mike Thomas was second, Zach Tomchick third and DelGrosso sixth. Other place winners for B-A were Dustin Harris- sixth in the 200, Eric Chamberlin- third in the high hurdles, Brandon Pruznak- sixth in the high jump, Dan Kovac- fifth in the 400, and Will Edwards, fifth in the pole vault and Wes Harpster-sixth in the pole vault.
“The whole team did a great job today,” said B-A boys coach Nick Lovrich. “Our depth is what out us over the top. We focus on the team concept and the kids but into it which makes us successful. Our kids should be proud of themselves. Dan Houser and Matt Plummer have worked hard all season and throughout their careers. The work paid off today with their MVP performances.”
Justin Wilson won the high hurdles for the Golden Eagles. Trey Brockett led a Tyrone 1-2-3 sweep of the top three places in the triple jump with Leonard Wilson second and Justin Wilson third. Adam Shaffer won the javelin for the Eagles. Ron Miller was second in the shot put, Terry Tate was second in the discus and Dave Miller was second in the pole vault. Other place winners for Tyrone were Billy Dean -fourth in the 100, third in the long jump, Justin Wilson -fourth in the high jump and Matt Wheland-fourth in the shot put.
