The Tyrone Elks annual youth recognition banquet was held Wednesday evening to showcase outstanding area youth in sports, academics, community involvement, drug awareness and scouting.
It was a night to recognize the youths\’ accomplishments, and they were joined by family and community members.
Each year, the banquet is coordinated by Elks members Steve Lucas and Gary McGovern.
The special guest speaker for the evening was Ed Dechellis, Penn State University men’s basketball coach. Reverend Terryann Talbot-Moses offered the invocation and benediction, and past state Elks president Dennis Kanouff spoke on the Elks perspective.
Corporate sponsors for the event included DelGrosso’s Park, Josten’s and The Hancock Group.
Lucas introduced the winners of the Elks Hoop Shoot and awarded those present with a certificate. Winners included: Olivia Stever, Sara Moses, Kayla Ergler, Brandon Gripp, Trent Lee and Mitchell Moyer.
He introduced the winners of the Elks Soccer Shoot and awarded those present with a certificate. Winners included: Kathleen Beck, Macey Lucas, Samantha Ashby, Nikki Moore, Ben Shetler, Kyle Raabe, Niko Lambert and Chad Hunter.
He also introduced the winners of the Elks drug poster/essay contest and awarded those present with a certificate. Recipients included Morgan Lucas and Macey Lucas.
Elks Lodge member Stephen Test introduced the Elks Teenagers of the Month and awarded those present with a certificate. Recipients included Tyrone Area High School seniors: Robbi Dick, Thaddeus Westley, Stephanie Catich and Teresa Fernandes.
Also, Thomas Crowl, Emily Fitzgerald, Sara Mease, Jordan Rhoat, Wendi Taylor, Daniel Domenick, Tyler Rickards, Joseph Houck, Adeena Harbst, Jason Wilson, Cody Jones, Cory Jones, James Haney and Kylie Wallace.
McGovern introduced the recipients of the Elks scholarships and awarded those present with a certificate. The recipient of the Elks Local Scholarship was Jill LaRosa; the recipient of the Ellenberger Scholarship was Jason Wilson and the recipient of the National Foundation Scholarship was Jonathan Miller.
Elks Lodge member Brian Bressler introduced the Eagle Scouts and presented those present with a certificate. Eagle Scouts included Vinnie Fontana from Troop 20 and Joshua Luckadoo from Troop 104.
Elks Lodge member and superintendent of Tyrone Area School District Dr. William Miller presented Educator of the Year awards to Tyrone teachers, Edward Vancas and Francis Bloom.
