The Joshua House fourth annual street 3-on-3 basketball tournament is scheduled for Saturday, July 17 on Tenth Street in Tyrone.
According to director of Joshua House, Jim Kilmartin, individuals and businesses are needed to act as sponsors and to donate prizes, food and drinks for the tournament. He is looking for individuals to donate basketball hoops for the event as well.
Kilmartin is also looking for volunteers to act as referees and scorekeepers, and for volunteers to help set up before the tournament and to help tear down the equipment after the event.
The tournament continues to grow each year. According to Kilmartin, there were 40 teams that participated last year, and he is expecting 60 teams this year. The tournament also acts as a great community event, where last year over 500 people visited downtown Tyrone due to the event.
The team pre-registration deadline is July 15, and there are limited slots available. If teams pre-register, the cost is $45 per team. Same day registration is $60 per team.
The day of the event, registration closes at 9:30 a.m., and games will begin at 10 a.m.
There are several divisions of competition for the tournament including: sixth-seventh grade combined, eighth-ninth grade guys, eighth-ninth grade girls, tenth-twelfth grade guys and tenth-twelfth grade girls.
Open divisions include: all star, competitive, recreational and senior stars (50 years and older).
At the tournament, every player will receive a T-shirt and a minimum of three games, with double elimination.
According to Kilmartin, there will be a dunk contest again this year and separate three point contests for adults and teens.
After the tournament, there is also a scheduled concert sponsored by Joshua House.
Kilmartin said this event acts as a fundraiser for Joshua House as well as a fun community activity. Numerous individuals participate in the basketball tournament, and many family members and friends visit downtown Tyrone to watch the event.
