Critically injured in an automobile accident May 26, Justin Wilson is on a long road of recovery.
The youth will celebrate his 18th birthday on Saturday, July 10 at his Decker Hollow home, returning after his hospital stay and weeks of therapy at HealthSouth in Altoona.
A “Card Shower” is planned for Justin to welcome him home on his special day.
\”Cards mean a lot to Justin and are very helpful in stimulating his mind and giving him encouragement along his road of recovery,” said his parents, John and Renee Wilson.
Also at home is a sister, Sarah and a brother, Ty.
Persons wishing to send him a card may do so by mailing it to Justin Wilson, Tyrone RD 3, Box 46.
Justin\’s first outing was on the Fourth of July when his family took him to DelGrosso Amusement Park for a couple of hours to visit with friends. Prior to the accident Justin had a job operating rides at the amusement park for the second summer.
A senior at Tyrone Area High School, Justin hopes to eventually get back into sports. He played basketball and received awards in track in the Mountain League for points in the high hurdle.
“We have Justin with us today through many, many prayers and the team work of those responding to the accident and the hospital care that followed,” his mother said.
“Justin is living proof that the emergency system works. Everybody did exactly what they needed to do. The Hookies, the emergency crew, they all did their job and the crew with the helicopter waited in the field at Gardners Candies plant to get him to the hospital as soon as possible. We are ever so grateful for all those that helped.\”
Justin remained in the Trauma Center at Altoona Hospital for several days, fighting for his life in a long road to recovery. From the accident, he suffered head injuries and about 22 broken bones.
“You would be surprised how many people have remembered Justin with cards,” his mother said.
“We have been going back over the cards with him and it is helping to get all that brain matter woke up. It helps stimulate his thinking and is a wonderful way of sharing with one another.”
Justin will be getting several hours of therapy every day at home while his road back to recovery continues to improve. Sometime later he will have a plate put in his head, and he wears a helmet at all times for protection.
His goal is to someday make it back on the playing field again and strive to be the best he can be.
