Northern Blair County is set to observe Veteran’s Day in a variety of ways this week including school assemblies, American Legion activities and even a tribute dinner.
On Wednesday, students at the Bellwood-Antis School District will be honoring Veteran’s and showing support for the current military with two assemblies.
First on Wednesday, there will be a morning program for elementary students will center around the theme, “Our Veteran’s – Our Shining Star.” During the assembly, there will be special music, and a short Veteran’s Day skit, several of the posters and essay winners will be highlighted.
The afternoon assembly for the middle/high school students will feature Sgt. Joe Koshute of the Air National Guard. The winners of the first Bellwood-Antis Lion’s Club Veteran’s Day Essay contest at the high school will be recognized.

Thursday, the American Legion is scheduled to hold its annual activities at 11 a.m. at the Legion at 1459 Lincoln Avenue in Tyrone. Veteran Morris Levine is scheduled to be the featured speaker.
The Tyrone Area High School Pops Extension is scheduled to perform at the event. The annual traditions including the placing of the wreaths, the POW/MIA table, the roll call of the deceased, the toller, the placing of the poppies, a firing squad and taps are all scheduled again this year.
The ceremonies will be covered by radio station 1340 WTRN once again. For more information, contact the Legion at 684-3342.
The Tyrone Community Partnership is also honoring the veterans with a “Tribute to the American Veteran” dinner on Thursday. The event is scheduled at the Tyrone Social Center and will include food, music, fellowship and American pride. Dinner will be served from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
The menu includes: pot roast, roast pork loin, homemade mashed potatoes and gravy, filling, baked corn, cole slaw, bread and butter, homemade deep dish apple pie, pumpkin pie and pumpkin cheesecake.
Tickets are available at the Tyrone Social Center, 120 W. 10th Street, G & P Dollar Stretcher, Alice’s Garden, Open Door Visions, The Chamber of Commerce and from members of the Tyrone Community Partnership.
Also on Thursday, although not tied specifically to Veteran’s Day, Tyrone area residents will have the opportunity to visit New York City. Organizers have scheduled a visit to Ground Zero; site of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorism attacks on the World Trade Center as part of the visit.
There will also be a trip to China Town and free time to go out on their own. Organizers note the city will still be busy since it is a weekday trip. They also point out it would be an enjoyable trip for children since students in Tyrone Area School District do not have school on Thursday or Friday of this week. Also in observance of Veteran’s Day, there will be no classes in the Bellwood-Antis School District, post offices will be closed as will many banks; it’s recommended individuals check with their particular financial institution. The Blair County Courthouse will be closed on Thursday. Nov. 11 which is also designated as a state and federal holiday.
