With help from BiLo and its customers, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is 3,000 steps closer to finding a cure for a childhood disease.
The Tyrone BiLo recently participated in a fund raising event to help the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Customer’s at Tyrone’s BiLo may have noticed the colorful paper sneakers that adorned the grocery store’s walls. For a $1 donation, customers could purchase one of the sneakers, to be placed on the wall.
The proceeds from the sneaker sales went to help fund research for juvenile diabetes.
According to a recent press release, BiLo donated $3,000 to the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the JDRF. BiLo raised the money for its donation through the sale of colorful paper sneakers to customers for $1 donations in BiLo supermarkets in Canton, McConnellsburg, Troy, Tyrone and Wellsboro in September. The paper sneakers symbolize the JDRF’s “Walk to cure diabetes.”
“We thank our customers for their generosity in joining with us to help support the great work of the JDRF,” said Mary Anne Hankins, Director of Consumer and Public Affairs for The Penn Traffic Company, which operates 26 corporate BiLo supermarkets in Pennsylvania and 29 associated BiLo and Riverside stores.
“BiLo and Penn Traffic have a special commitment to organizations that help improve the lives of children and families and we are proud to partner with the JDRF as it brings hope for a healthier life to people with diabetes in our community,” Hankins said in a recent press release.
More than 30,000 Americans, including 13,000 children, are diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes each year. That is more than one child per hour of every day, every year who is diagnosed, and there is no cure.
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation was founded in 1970 by the parents of children with juvenile diabetes. The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications, which include heart disease, stroke, blindness and kidney failure. JDRF is the leading fundraiser for diabetes research and has raised more than $800 million for research worldwide, including $85 million last year.
The Penn Traffic Company operates 109 supermarkets in Pennsylvania, central and upstate New York, Vermont and New Hampshire under the BiLo, P&C, and Quality trade names. Penn Traffic also operates a wholesale food distribution business serving 80 licensed franchises and 39 independent operators.
