BiLo/Riverside is teaming with the American Red Cross to enable customers to send desperately needed aid to tsunami victims.
The BiLo/Riverside Tsunami Relief Effort will begin accepting donations from customers on Saturday, January 8. Simply by adding a dollar to their grocery bill at the register, customers will be able to make a donation to the Red Cross International Response Fund which is helping the victims of the tsunamis in southern Asia and eastern Africa. Customers will be able to donate through January 29.
BiLo’s corporate parent, the Penn Traffic Company, also will make a donation to the Tsunami Relief Effort on behalf of the company.
“The disaster in Asia is a terrible tragedy, not only for the many thousands of people who lost their lives, but for the millions who are now without homes, food or water,” said Mary Anne Hankins, Director of Consumer and Public Affairs for Penn Traffic, which operates 26 corporate BiLo supermarkets in Pennsylvania and 29 associated BiLo and Riverside stores. “Our customers are eager to do whatever they can to help, and our Tsunami Relief Effort will enable them to conveniently make a donation while they shop to a reliable, trusted organization that is directly helping to bring relief.
“It’s time to set up a fundraising program like this in all our supermarkets, so we ask for our customers’ patience in waiting for our January 8 starting date. We thank them in advance for what we know will be a very generous response. We also thank the American Red Cross for partnering with us to help people whose need is truly desperate.
“All of us at BiLo/Riverside were stunned by the magnitude of this tragedy. BiLo/Riverside has always been a good neighbor in our communities, and right now the whole world is our community.”
