It was another tough game played from Tyrone as they lost to Bald Eagle Area Friday night, 80-69. The Eagles have lost three of their last four conference games now and are 8-5 in the Mountain Athletic Conference.
Tyrone came out strong in the first quarter, finishing on a 13-4 run that put the Golden Eagles up 20-16 after one. Josh Crabtree led the Eagle attack scoring eight of his 12 points in the first quarter alone.
It looked as if Tyrone was heading for another big victory in the conference until Bald Eagle Area turned on the jets in the second quarter busting a 12-0 run late in the half to give the Eagles a 37-29 lead after trailing Tyrone 29-25 with 2:45 to go in the half.
Byron Kost hit a last second trey to give Tyrone less room to cover going into the half down 37-32.
As the second half continued, Tad Chamberlain came out and picked up two quick fouls with 6:39 to go in the third giving him his fourth foul. With him out of the lineup, Tyrone put in Jason Haney to do the dirty work, and he managed to play one of the best games of his career under the towering Boone’s from Bald Eagle Area.
“Jason definitely gave us a lift tonight,” assistant coach George Gripp said. “He played really well with the exception of a couple of rebounds here and there. He filled in for Chamberlain pretty good.”
As the third quarter picked up action, Josh Crabtree stole a pass and took it the length of the court and split Cory and Cody Boone with a no look pass to Leonard Wilson for the uncontested lay-up that cut the lead to 38-36.
After a technical foul assessed to coach Mike Harris, McClain hit both free throws giving Bald Eagle Area a 43-36 lead. The foul ratio was 8-1 in favor of Bald Eagle as Tyrone was having the worst time trying to hit overcontested shots in the post drawing a lot of contact and getting ‘no calls’.
Tyrone picked up the composure despite the momentum shift in the crowd as they went on a 16-2 run with 3:12 to go in the third quarter and took a 49-46 lead. Tyrone’s intensity sky-rocketed and pushed all of the momentum toward Tyrone.
With Bald Eagle Area in double bonus early in the third, they would shoot two shots for the rest of the game giving Tyrone a hard time to play catch up if they would happen to lose their lead.
After a couple of shots from Adam Corle, Tyrone took a 54-52 lead with :19 seconds to go in the third, but Cory Boone found a seam in the defense and laid it in to tie the game going into the fourth, 54-54.
Bald Eagle went to the foul line 19 times in the third quarter to Tyrone’s two from Leonard Wilson. It was really a sight to see all of the foul shooting on one side of the court the entire third quarter.
Going into the fourth quarter, Tyrone and Bald Eagle were locked tight at 54 a piece looking to hold out the rest of the game for that conference win.
Chamberlain didn’t last long in the fourth as he fouled out with 3:50 to go in the game after substituting in at the 5:00 mark. Leonard Wilson and Adam Corle both fouled out in the fourth as well as Tyrone couldn’t make up the deficit Bald Eagle put up as they trailed by nine with 1:10 to go in the game.
Kevin Hershberger was held to just six points going into the fourth quarter as he came up short on most of his shots. It just wasn’t falling for him until under a minute to go in the game he hit two clutch three’s that cut the lead to eight then seven following free throws. Tyrone just couldn’t get back into the game as they would lose 80-69 to Bald Eagle Area.
Despite the loss, Tyrone had four player’s in double figures. Leonard Wilson and Adam Corle both scored 13 a piece leading all Tyrone scorers in points. Kevin Hershberger and Josh Crabtree scored 12 points as they just couldn’t get shots to fall throughout the contest.
Dustin McClain scored 24 for Bald Eagle Area hitting 11-11 from the free throw line to aid the win for the Eagles. Cody and Cory Boone combined for 30 points, 16 points more than they combined in Tyrone earlier in the season.
It was just a rough night for Tyrone offensively, shots didn’t fall and the foul ratio was just too much to overcome when it came to foul shots. Bald Eagle Area went 43 times to the foul line compared to Tyrone’s 14. It was that difference that made the game for Bald Eagle.
