Bedford and host Bellwood-Antis battled for the boys title on Monday in the 43rd annual Bellwood-Antis Invitational leaving the remainder of the 21 school track and field meet fall in the distance. When all was done and the final tally had been calculated, Bedford stood on top for the second straight year with 129 points, while the Blue Devils finished second with 101 points. Bishop McCort was a distant third with 39 points followed by Bald eagle Area and Penns Valley with 29, United with 27 and Tyrone and Northern Cambria tied for seventh with 25 points.
Aaron Bell, Brandon Pruznak and Ben Hatch each had a big hand in the Blue Devils success.
Bell won the 1600 in 4:44.18, nearly five seconds ahead of the rest of the field, and the 3200 in 10:32.1, 11 seconds better than the next runner. Then Aaron ran the third leg of the Blue Devils’ 3200 relay team, along with Evan Hughes, Chris Edmiston, and Hatch, that shattered the meet record by eight seconds. This was the only new meet record in the 2005 edition of the B-A Invitational.
Pruznak won the 400 with a time of 52.0 and was second in the 200, a race the B-A sophomore has been running in competition only a week, and fourth in the long jump.
Hatch kicked past Penns Valley’s Judson Brooker, the pre-race favorite in the final 10 meters to win the 800 and anchored the record-setting 3200 relay. The freshman sensation cut nearly four full seconds off the B-A freshman record, which he keeps lowering with nearly every race and was only two seconds off the meet record.
“Ben is just a great talent,” said B-A boys coach Nick Lovrich. “Every time he gets a challenge, he steps up and does better.
Hatch was second in the 400 (53.1), Edmiston was third in the 800 (2:08.81), Adam Mueller was fifth in the 110 high hurdles (16.5).
The 1600 relay team of Bell, Edmiston, Hatch and Pruznak was third and the 400 relay team of Devon Clapper, Brandon Eger, Dustin Harris and Dan Kovac was fourth.
In the field events, Tony DelGrosso was third in the discus (136-0) and fifth in the shot put (43-4 1/2), while Ted Bailor was fifth in the pole vault (10-6) and Ricky Shawley was sixth (10-0).
“The thing about Tony is his throws keep getting better, that was the furthest he has thrown the javelin this year,” said Lovrich. “All of our kids did well today. We knew from the dual meet (the B-A boys only loss in a 13-1 dual season) that Bedford was very talented. Aaron, Brandon, Ben and Tony have done a lot for us all season. With the season coming to a close, you need your big guns to step up and perform. Today ours did the job.”
It was a chilly yet blissfully rain-free afternoon as the Tyrone Golden Eagle Track team took the field for the 2005 Bellwood-Antis Invitational at Bellwood-Antis High School on Monday.
From twenty-one competing teams, Tyrone managed nothing less than top ten in both meets. The final score for the boys was twenty five points, putting them in sixth and a ninth place for the girls with 27 points.
Winners in the girls meet were spread evenly over the track and field. Junior Emily Ingle had two places with a first in the 1600 meter run (5:36.9) and a third in the 800 meter run (2:30.2). Junior Katie Schreckengost took fifth in the javelin with a measure of one hundred feet and seven inches. Sophomore Elizabeth Tepsic placed second in the triple jump (32-6) and sixth in the long jump (15-1).
The boys team had only four place winners which included Bill Dean who took sixth in the one hundred yard dash (11.58 sec.), Adam Shaffer who placed third in the javelin ( 165-7), and Trey Brockett with a fourth place in the triple jump (37-11).
On the girls side, Steph Hatch captured the only first place by winning the high jump with a jump of 4-10. Lady Blue Devil teammate Lauren Leap was second in the high jump with the same height. Leap was also fifth in the 400 (1:05.1) Allison Sinisi was second in the pole vault (8-6), Ashley Mueller was fifth in the 100 intermediate hurdles (17.3), Hatch was fourth in the triple jump (30-10 1/2) and Lauren Carter was fourth in the 300 low hurdles (50.7)).
The Bellwood-Antis 400 (Hatch, Carter, Erica Greene and Mueller) and 1600 relay team (Carter, Jenna Ralston, Chelsea Wilson and Leap) were both second to Bishop McCort teams and the B-A 3200 relay team (Ralston, Becca Colyer, Arin Cherry and Sarah Bell) was sixth.
“We knew coming in that Bishop McCort was very strong, they should be a favorite at districts, and we were just a point out of second place,” said B-A girls coach Julie Roseborough. “We saw some good things and the mistakes we made are the correctable kind, the little things where we were subpar, can be worked on. It was better to find out about them today than at districts or the West Central Coaches meet. We just need to work them out.”
The Tyrone and Bellwood-Antis track and field teams now prepare for the West Central Coaches meet this Friday, 1:30 p.m. at Mansion Park in Altoona.
