The Tyrone girls softball team ran into a problem right at the beginning of their game at Lewistown on Tuesday afternoon.
Lewistown took advantage of six Eagle errors in the first two innings to put eight runs on the scoreboard, while Angie Rocco set the Tyrone girls down in order in their first two at bats.
The Tyrone defense finally settled down behind senior left-handed pitch Hilary McNelis, playing mistake-proof softball over the final four innings. Rocco however, neve gave in, tossing a perfect no-run, no-hit game for the Lady Panthers.
Twenty-one Lady Eagle batters went to the plate and Rocco retired all 21, 10 of them by strikeout. Rocco didn’t walk a batter and her teammates didn’t committ a single error.
“I wish I knew what our problem is,” said Tyrone coach Lois Loncher. “ We played them 13 innings when we played at Tyrone in the first game. I am very disappointed-I thought after winning the Southern Huntingdon game on Saturday, that we had some momentum going. We started off bad today and it just snowballed on us. Sometimes you notice things in warmups. I knew we had a few problems, some minor details, but that is no excuse. We’ll just have to see where we are in the next couple of games.”
Hower led Lewistown on offense with two hits and knocked in three runs.
Tyrone (5-9) host Penns Valley at the Harry K. Sickler Athletic Complex on Thursday, with the first pitch set for 4:30 p.m.
