The Blair County Indians and Centre County Orioles squared off in a battle of the undefeateds in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Penn State University\\\’s Beaver Field in the Centre County 28 and Over Sluggers Baseball league.
In game one, senior citizen Gene Decker got the starting nod on the mound for the Indians and the Blair County squad took the opener 15-2.
In his second outing of the season, Mr. Decker again allowed just one run on four hits through the first five innings of the game. Joe Holsinger came in to pitch the final two innings allowing only one run.
On the offensive side of the ball, the Indians scored 15 runs on 12 hits.
Jon Moeller, Mark Jackson, Eric Welsh, Kevin Peterson and Gene Decker each collected two hits to pace the Indians.
The only hitter for the Orioles with multiple hits was Shawn Mckee who went two-for-three.
Gene Decker earned his second win in two starts and Mark Warrender took the loss for the Orioles.
In game two, the Orioles pounded out 12 hits off of Indian pitching along with some sloppy defense to gain the victory by a score of 13 to 5. Through five innings the game remained close with the Orioles ahead 5 to 3.
After a pitching change for the Indians in the sixth inning, the Orioles went on to score eight runs on six hits in the sixth inning.
The Orioles pitching and defense held the Indians offense from scoring similar to what the Indians had in the first game. Both Jamie Smith and Mike Gess had solid pitching performances to help the Orioles garner the victory and also hand the Indians their firstst loss of the season.
Top hitters for the Orioles with two hits apiece were Mike Gess, Shawn Mckee, and Mark Warrender.
John Gummo and Matt Dillen had two hits each for the Indians.
Mike Gess was the winning pitcher and Shawn Harshaw took the loss for the Indians.
Game Notes: Gary Weaver of Bald Eagle, had an outstanding catch in the right-centerfield gap then finishing it off with a double play on an advancing runner back at first base….Both the Indians and Orioles are now 3-1 in league play and tied for first place with the Phillies.
