Those passing by the Borough of Tyrone’s municipal building on Logan Avenue may have noticed some changes.
During the last few weeks, workers have been working on the outside of the building and more recently on the steps leading to the main entrance.
In June, borough council approved bids for work to repair the municipal building on Logan Avenue. The borough’s building was built in 1916 and has seen upgrades over the years including those related to Americans with Disabilities Act issues.
Council considered two contractors for bids involving the repointing, cleaning and step repair of the building. Greensburg-based Raimondo Masonry Restoration Contractor was awarded the bids on both parts of the project. They were the low bidder between the two contractors that submitted bids.
The bid from Raimondo Masonry was for $22,100 for the step repair and $37,400 for the repointing. The total bid was $59,500.
Shortly after council approved the bid, Borough Manager Sharon Dannaway said work would be under way within a month from the bid approval. Sure enough, the work began in mid-July. It was estimated the work would take about six weeks for the contractor to finish the job.
The project’s completion appears to be on target. The cleaning and repointing on the building was done first. Earlier this week, a good portion of the steps leading to the front of the building was removed.
Observations on Friday afternoon showed the work on the steps had progressed to the point were new material was put in place. The materials were in the process of settling and drying.
The borough building has been upgraded over the years including the installation of elevators and more recently a sound system in the council chambers and devices to aid those with hearing impairment attending council meetings.
