The Tyrone girls tennis team traveled to Mill Hall to battle Central Mountain on Wednesday afternoon for the third of five straight season opening road matches.
The Lady Wildcats shut out the Tyrone girls 7-0, but the first match lasted longer than all the others together.
The Number One singles featured Becky Swann from the Tyrone roster against Nicole Ellis from Central Mountain. The two antagonists battled tooth and nail for each and every point. Ellis won the first game in a tiebreaker 7-6, before Swann came back to win the second game by a 6-4 score. In the super tiebreaker that followed, Ellis finally pulled out a 7-4 win to take the match.
“That number one singles match was simply phenomenal,” explained Tyrone coach Mike Hample. “The two girls went back-and-forth, back-and-forth throughout the entire match, including the third game super tiebreaker.”
Tyrone lost for the third straight time and has matches at Bishop Guilfoyle on Monday and at Central on Tuesday, before finally coming home to the Clay Avenue Courts for their first home match on Wednesday against Altoona. Three matches in as many days at the beginning of the week, won’t make the Lady Eagles situation any easier.
“Becky Swann was just phenomenal and both doubles matches were competitive,” said Hample. “Central Mountain must have had 30 girls on their roster. They had a mixture of senior, juniors, sophomores and even freshmen. That’s what we need here at Tyrone. The key to success is for us to get the younger girls interested in tennis.”
