In their first match, the Tyrone Golden Eagle golf team lost to Lewistown by 10 strokes. Jason Tuskovich shot 112 that night, but on Tuesday, Tuskovich improved 21 strokes and turned in a score of 91. The improved score helped Tyrone beat Everett by seven and Tussey Mountain by 38 to send their record to 3-2.
“I was hitting my driver a lot better, and the flags were in places I liked them,” Tuskovich said while explaining his better play.
Matt Brooks also helped toward the lower team score for Tyrone by cutting seven strokes off his previous score of 95 for an 88.
Jimmy Gillam, who missed breaking the school record for low score by one stroke in the first match, finished with a 1-under-par 71.
Gillam, who drained many long putts in his first round of the season, struggled with the putter Tuesday.
“I hit the ball well today, but I just did not make any putts,” Gillam said.
Gillam pared the first two holes before getting his first birdie by making a chip from the fairway on the par-4 third hole.
On the fourth hole, Gillam missed his second 10 foot putt of the round which set the tone for the day.
After managing to birdie the par-4 fifth hole, a hole Gillam bogeyed in his first round, he had an eagle opportunity after two monster shots on the par-5 seventh hole.
His putt of about 10 feet missed to the right, and he tapped in for a birdie to move to 3-under-par, exactly where he was after as many holes in the first match.
Gillam pared the next seven holes, including the 14th, which he bogeyed to fall a shot behind the record 3-under-par 69 pace in the first match.
Tuesday, the 15th hole turned out to be the end of Gillam\’s most recent attempt to break the record. After coming up short on his approach shot, Gillam chipped on and his putting problems resurfaced, leading to a double bogey.
Despite having midrange putts for birdie on each of the final three holes, Gillam was unable to convert on any of the attempts and finished 1-under-par.
Ryan Ruscio overcame a shaky 48 on the front nine to shoot 42 on the back and record a score of 90 to round out the team scoring for Tyrone (3-2) at 340, 24 shots better than their score in the first match.
Everett\’s Jordan House had the second-lowest score of the day with a 3-over-par 75. Josh Rosenberry finished second on his team with an 84. Carl Michael scored a 93, and Scott College finished with a 95 to give Everett (2-3) a total score of 347 and a victory over Tussey Mountain.
Ian Mitchell shot a team-low 84 for Tussey Mountain, which finished with a team score of 378. Dave Leidy and Amanda Kerr managed to keep their scores under 100 at 94 and 96 respectively. Marcus Huston had a 104 to round out Tussey Mountain\’s scoring.
Jamie Levinson, who shot 112 along with Tuskovich in the first match, also improved his play and shot a 105.
Tyrone\’s next match will be Thursday when they travel to Mount Union for a match against the Trojans and Bellefonte.
