The Central freshman ice hockey team played Bishop Guilfoyle to a 5-5 draw on Wednesday evening, Nov. 16 and then edged Altoona 3-2 a day later. Both contests were waged at Galactic Ice.
Cetral overcame an early goal by Altoona to come back for a 2-2 tie after one period and then scored the only goal of the final two periods to take home the win.
Jamen Solensky (Cambria Heights) slammed home a goal off an assist from Chris Matish (Penn Cambria) at the 7:32 mark of the opening period to tie the score early. Then after a second Mountain Lion score jumped Altoona into a 2-1 lead, Matish scored an unassisted tally with just 43 ticks left in the period to get Central back into the game again.
Central goal keeper Matthew Erlichman (Bedford) stopped everything in the last two periods, turning back 11 of 13 shots on goal overall.
In the third period, Solensky pushed home the game-winner with an assist from Nate Reid (Spring Cove) at the 9:27 mark for the victory.
On Wednesday evening, the puck was flying into both nets as the Central freshmen team battled the Bishop Guilfoyle to a 5-5 standoff.
Central opened with a flash, scoring four first-period goals, but then allowed BG to come back to earn the tie outscoring Central 5-1 over the final two periods of the contest.
Adam Erlichman ((Bedford) opened the hot first period with an unassisted goal just 1:17 into the game and Justin Howard (Tyrone) added a goal with assists from Jamen Solensky and Nate Reid at the 9:06 mark.
Bishop Guilfoyle scored two minutes later to slice the lead in half, but Central came right back with two more goals. First it was Howard again off an assist from Erlichman and then Solensky netted a goal with an assist from Zach Donner ( (Tyrone) with less than a minute remaining in the period.
BG scored a second-period goal to cut the lead in half again 4-2.
Solensky slammed his second score into the net at the beginning of the third period, with an assist from Zach Bumbarger (Spring Cove) to put Central in a commanding 5-2 advantage, but BG refused to go down without a fight. The Marauder’s freshmen team tallied three goals in the final 3:07 of the game to earn the 5-5 tie.
The Central freshmen team (2-0-1) will now play in the Dean Patterson Thanksgiving Tournament, opening with a game at 7 p.m. tonight at Galactic Ice against Hollidaysburg.
