Something about Bellefonte and sophomores hasn\’t sat too well with the Tyrone Lady Eagles, lately.
Last year, playing at Bellefonte in December, Tyrone was manhandled inside by then-sophomore Missy Clouser, whose game-high 20 points led the Lady Raiders to a 10-point victory.
Last night, playing in the Centre County seat against the Lady Raiders, it was a sophomore again that did most of the damage. This time, it was Angie Proper, a diminutive but slick moving point guard who was always pushing, always attacking on her way to an 18-point night.
Bellefonte won 51-33, sending the Lady Eagles below the .500 mark for the first time this season with their third consecutive loss. Now 3-4 overall and 0-3 in Section II of the Mountain Athletic Conference, Tyrone will play unbeaten Indian Valley Friday night at Highland Park.
Tyrone again struggled offensively, hitting only 13 field goals, and 12 of those were split between Emily McKenna and Liz Tepsic – the Lady Eagles\’ only players with more than three points. McKenna made six shots from the field, including three three-point baskets, on her way to an 18-point night. Tepsic also had six field goals and finished with 12.
Tyrone\’s only other basket was a three-pointer by Tiffany Bradford in the fourth quarter.
The Lady Raiders, meanwhile, had scoring contributions from six players, and received 14 points from Clouser to compliment Proper.
But the star of the night was Bellefonte\’s 10th grade guard, who found ways to get herself points when her team needed them most. She made five trips to the foul line, scored inside on penetration and rebounds, and made one three-point basket at the start of the fourth quarter to extend a 38-26 lead to 15.
Until then, the game was close and highly contested, although the Lady Eagles never led. Tyrone trailed 5-0 until the 2:20 mark of the first quarter when McKenna made her first trey, and was behind 7-5 at the end of the period.
McKenna scored eight more in the second quarter, but Clouser and Proper combined for seven to offset her effort and send Bellefonte into the locker room up 20-15.
The Lady Raiders dominated play in the paint throughout the first half with an 18-7 advantage on the boards. In the first three minutes of the game alone, Bellefonte outrebounded Tyrone 8-1.
McKenna opened the third quarter with a three-pointer 12 seconds in to cut the lead to 20-18, but over the next 2:30 Bellefonte went on an 8-0 run to go ahead 28-18. Clouser and Proper combined to score 10 in the period.
HOOP NOTES: Bellefonte outrebounded Tyrone 30-14 for the game … Bradford led the Lady Eagles with four rebounds … Tyrone hasn\’t had two players reach double figures in the same game since December 7 against Juniata Valley … Tyrone has yet to score 60 points this season.

Bellefonte raced to a 29-1 lead in the first quarter of last night\’s jayvee game and never looked back in a 68-35 victory.
Kassie Faretta and Megan Turiano each scored nine to lead the Lady Eagles.
