New hours of operation have been announced for the Blair County Compost Facility.
The regular schedule for the Blair County Compost/Recycling Facility began Monday, March 27 and is as follows: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. These hours will run until November 18.
The facility is always closed on Wednesdays, Sundays and all county holidays.
Also, unscreened mulch is available at $5 per cubic yard. There is free shoveling of unscreened mulch for automobiles only. There is no free truckload quantities.
Screened compost and mulch is available at $10 per cubic yard. There is no free shoveling of screened material.
Yard waste drop-off prices remain the same: small pick-up – $4, full-size pick-up – $5 and dump truck – $10.
Besides accepting yard waste and brush to make compost and mulch, the facility is a fully equipped recycling center that accepts newspapers and phone books, magazines and catalogs, hardback books, paperback books, junk mail and office paper and used oil (motor oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid).
It also accepts No. 1 and No. 2 plastic bottles and jugs, corrugated cardboard, steel (tin) cans, aluminum cans, brown, green and clear-glass bottles and jars, cell phones, rechargeable batteries, automobile batteries, ink jet printer cartridges, CDs and DVDs.
Used oil filters and used cooking oil are also accepted for a small fee.
The compost facility is open year-round to the citizens of Blair and Cambria counties.
To reach the compost facility from Altoona, take Route 36 north to Skyline Drive. Make a right turn onto Skyline Drive then a quick left turn onto Blacksnake Road. The compost facility is located about a mile down Blacksnake Road.
